Pretty much only when there was mostly light infantry / cavalry and no archers / armored troops and when they didn't have to capture / hold a position as they rely on being able to twang away their arrows while moving, so I'd say they had a pretty damn specialised role.
However, this is not entirely true in LIF, and there are a few reasons for that :
- Archers, foot or horse (if ever implemented), are not limited in terms of arrow supply should their guild be advanced enough. I've seen archers carry 100s of arrows in their inventory, which is not possible IRL, especially on horse back. If this was fixed, horse archers would run out quickly if they didn't have a point to ressuply, which means they have to defend a position, and they suck at it.
- Heavy armor does not stop arrows. IRL heavy infantry and cavalry (at least the riders) would not be affected too much by horse archers and could just chase them down until they ran out of arrows or decided to flee the battle altogether because their arrows would just stick into the armor or be deflected.
- IRL, the way to counter horse archers are... foot archers. Know why ? Because horses take a LOT of space, which means for a given surface, you can have MANY more foot archers twanging away than you can have horse archers, PLUS foot archers can field heavier bows, which means better armor penetration and more importantly more range.
So yea, as it is, horse archers would be the best at everything in LIF.
i like the way you think
so i would sugest some rules to horse archery.
-the precision should be horrible
-a specialized bow that has very low damage
-when the horse archer is drawing the bow the horse should slow a lot.
-when mounted the player should have a maximun equiped items weigth, so it could not wear a heavy armor and a lot of arrows. this would aply to other cavalary players too.
this way the horse archer would not hit the enemy too easyli, if hit would not do much damage, and when firing would be a easy target to foot archers and ligth cavalry.
like it was IRL.
they would be strong against massive fromations of infantry, but weak agains foot archers anda cavalary.
