Development News #52 - Beta Test information and introducing Lore!

Hey Feudalists!

The third closed beta test run has officially come to an end. We want to thank you all for your cooperation, feedback and patience - you’ve helped us to amass important data that we’ll use to better your future experience in significant ways. Thank you!

Having analyzed the data and issues we've encountered during this test run, we decided that we are going to have a fourth run with the start date somewhere near the end of June.

Meanwhile, we have finally prepared the first pack of lore material. The Scriptorium has been opened on our website. We are going to fill it up with stories, manuscripts and other work related to the Life is Feudal universe!

Image

At first, we are going to tell you a little bit about the mythology of our world. You can read it on our designated page: http://lifeisfeudal.com/LoreStories/

The lore section of our forum will be supported by our new loremaster, Mark Rhainer. Everyone - especially role players - are welcome to ask any lore-related questions in our lore section. Please remember that filling out the vast world's lore is a long, ongoing process and we are going to do it step-by-step, as it is impossible to work out all the aspects simultaneously (but we are working very diligently on this project).

Stay tuned for updates; there are a lot of interesting things ahead!

- The team

I must say, I'm rather disappointed with this wave and concerned for the future of the game in general. Nothing new was added for this wave. Where was the trade system that was supposed to be implemented? Where was the revamped swimming system? Where are the horsedrawn carts, the field battles, the siege system, the new castle walls, the terraforming fixes? The game right now feels in a state that will not be ready for open beta until 2018... There are so many things that need to be implemented and tested before opening the beta, but they don't even have a release date yet. I love Life is Feudal, more so than any other game I've played, but the constant extending of the schedule from open beta mid-2016 to early-2017 to late-2017 and now potentially to 2018 is ridiculous.

I feel like this game is ever so slowly being infected by roleplay. This game was originally sold as a hardcore pvp kingdom vs kingdom game with full loot, asset destruction, resource management, and terraforming.

Now we have god damn towers that cowards build.... (coward towers?) to give an advantage in pvp. Why not just build a good base on your claim for an advantage????

Lore, NPCs, Etc. Wtf. People are leaving because the game is buggy not because of the original concept of the game.

It's been over 3 years since I started playing this game. In one of the early alphas, bobik handed out weapons for us to kill each other. The first thing I ever did in this game was fight and that was facilitated by Bobik. It was awesome. Please don't bitch the game down after all this time waiting.

I tried to read the lore. But it crashed when I crossed a server line. Then I got stuck at initializing.

Personally I'm fine with waiting as long as something is added or fixed during that time! I like to think of my game purchases in hours played.. so even at the highest supporter level, I am still well below my dollars per hour for entertainment/enjoyment.

One thing I don't understand is why the push for lore? There's no quests, no NPCs, and it's a sandbox game! Why not spend that money to bring in another developer to help bring the many "work in progress" features at least into the beta for us to test? Like another person said above, all those things were shown that were coming into the game yet all I've seen out of the phases I've played since December is the change to the combat trees.

After all these months of closed betas, we are one phase away from Open Beta with still nothing new to test. Thinking as a tester, how can it be expected that these very many features will be brought in to the game and expect that they all work perfectly without requiring a wipe to fix something? I would rather test these features in a closed beta with expectations of wipes when things go wrong instead of the open beta where there will be more players, no wipe going into production, etc?

Hi,

will lore have an effect in game? Or is "fluff"? And looking forward to the lore!

"Having analysed this we have decided to do a fourth test run"

This sentence is the most disappointing sentence I have ever seen in your development blogs. Hundreds of people who have been playing LIF YO for a very long time have been waiting months already to be able to play the mmo.

When the first news came, we were al excited but that excitement was fast gone when we heard the first wave is only for the first couple of people who bought the game.

Then we though, finally, wave 1 is over. We are next! But no, wave 1 was going to consist of 3 tests.

So we wait, patiently, looking for mmo gameplay on youtube and checking the news every day until test 3 is finally over so we can have something to look forward too.

Wave 3 is then finally over. "We must be next now!" is what we think. But no.. "Having analysed this we have decided to do a fourth test run".

I'm sure you as a team have a lot of stuff going on and want to have everything run perfectly before you let more people in. But the way most LIF YO players have been treated is insane. Everytime you get our hopes up and then finaly when we think we can start playing the mmo in maybe a month or two you say we have to wait longer.

Stop the postponing please and dont make promises you cant keep

I must say the number of things I feel time is being wasted on is steadily growing.

The people writing the lore and doing the website scripting probably arent the same people working on game mechanics, I get that. But when it comes to things like Lore and NPCs, whats the point?

Im not sure what the overall goal is other than maybe adding atmosphere to the game? I am strongly hoping you wont be able to kill NPCs to get what you need (Unless its something you can ONLY get from killing NPCs).

Is the intent for NPCs to essentially be island natives whom tell the player of the history and legends of the new land, essentially making them fluff content or are they going to have a more tangible effect on gameplay?

So guys after your couple weeks of the next closed beta test once again they will find a crap ton of stuff wrong with their game and make it to about the 10th closed beta before final bringing open beta which will then take at least 5 years by then the game will be outdated and a new game will take its place. This game is one of a kind and def have 4k+ hours in the game and I love it but the direction they started heading bringing out lore and crap that way less than half of us care about is disappointing. Fix the game, add the new content you promised and get into open beta already. Then add you some stories and lore and all those goodies. We don't need those things in the game right now to play and have fun, YO I had tons of fun on and there was no need for this mess your adding right now. FOCUS on the actual game play please <3

If you've read the latest devblog a bit carefully, you'll possibly find out that the bloke who prepared that lore stuff is not a programmer at all. He's just an RP enthusiast. And, as far as I understood, this work has been done not in a damage to the primary process of development. SoI cant see anything bad in this. :)

It might not be an important part for most of us players, but to them as devs a bit of lore will allow them to do a hell of a lot more with adverticement and promo's. It just fleshes out the game a lot more.
And since they are not using any of the dev team, but a straight up lore guy to write it, then I don't see the harm in it.

Because their rich Lore and RP background is what got the game funded originally right? No. It was not.

All focus needs to be on the core game originally promised.

The cool part about Beta and what was previously described is that the players make the history and the story. Thats why there were originally no NPCs. When Vanirs get eradicated by the Russian war party, that will be a part of LiF history. We don't need some bored literature major writing all of our collective history.
