Brigandine instead of scalemail.

Post by Ubeer » 16 Sep 2017, 06:20

I dont understand why they decided to have scalemail in this game. Its useless compared to chainmail and padded and it was not a very common armour type at all compared to padded and chainmail.

It would make more sense to have brigandine armour instead since it was a common and effective armour used by men at arms and mostly footmen.

And the dreadful disgusting leather ''armour'' for the archers...........
Why cant makers of tv, movies and games stay away of leather

Padded armour is way more effective realy, and also alot cheaper to make.

Just for balance.

Most armors were a combination of plate and chainmale but they didn't implement it like this. Brigadine should be what the Heavy Leather Armor set is.

Brigandine was used with padded and mail or only padded underneath. But they dont have the layer armour system in the game and thats fine i guess.

However, you cant compare brigandine with leather. Brigandine was the best thing you could wear except plate armour.

Brigandine was a develoment of the coat of plates wich preceeded platemail. It was used by the nobles as well as men at arms and the main advantage is that its cheaper to make and more easy to put on.

What I knew about this type is, that the earlier versions were made out of leather, cloth... and only a few iron plates put on (like what the current medium plate armor looks like).

Later versions 14th/15th century were made from a combination of scale and chainmail. There are even a few pieces that got galvanized which was developed in the renessaince.
I can only assume they really wanted to stay to the 11th century weapon and armor stuff.

They have 14th and mid 15th century platemail. Also the chainmail is 12 to 13th century so the argument about the 11th century is invalid.

The cloth and/or leather was used as a fabric for the plates. They where stiched on. They used canvas on the inside and leather on the outside to sandwich the plates in. Note that the leather wasnt the protection here, its the plates wich all overlap and are stiched both upper and lower sides.

NO! Brigandine was never a mix between scalemail and chainmail. Scalemail is a hollywood thing as much as leather is.

There is ton of information about this on the inthernet and youtube.

I agree with you on the Hollywood comment. Scalemail is mainly a Movie invention. But Chainmail was used back as far as 6th century. Even the Romans had a version, Lorica Hamata I believe.

But yes the brigandine, or coat of plates, style armor was often worn over a chainmail hauburk and a gambison or akiton. It was considered "transitional" plate armor.

Often confused with "scalemail".
While it is actually lamellar.

And it wasnt only a "eastern" armor.
Image
The Norse were quite fond of it, because it could be made out of leather, bone, or metal plates.

What a lamellar is made of ? Scale, so scale armor

Like the corrazina is made of plate, so plate armor.
simple as that.
