LiF MMO Interactive Map

Post by Telakh » 20 Mar 2014, 07:08

We are glad to present our Lif Map tool
It works similar to google maps.

Update to version 1.2.14
Minor bug fixes. Server side updated for future features.

Description:

Program displays:
LiF map in 7 different scales from 1:16 to 1:0.25 pixels per tile;
Height map (test version. will be better soon);
Kilometer and Server grids;
Land Marks; No need to memorise places, resources and claims.
Coordinates of any place that you point. No chance to loose your friend.

Metrics:
Zoom is measured in pixel to ingame tiles. Example: 1:8 means 1 pixel equals to 8x8 tiles.
Ingame tile equals 2x2 meters. Coordinates are shown in meters.
Map size is 21x21 kilometers.
Map square equals to 1x1 kilometer or 500x500 tiles.
Server square equals to 3x3 kilometers.
Heght lines are drawn every 25 vertical meters.

Requirements:
Microsoft .net framework v.4 or higher
Internet connection with 8080 port open.

Description and features:
Use mouse drag and mouse scroll to navigate. Left-click to place markers.
Map pieces are downloaded from our server every time you run the program so it's not that fast yet. Caching will be added later.
You can manualy enter coordinates to move there.

Markers
Markers are displayed when you toggle them and are placed by leftclick on any map location. A small dialog box will be displayed, asking you to select the type and enter description.
If you leftclick an existing marker, you can change or delete it.
All markers are ONLY saved in a local markers.xml file at the same directory where the Map program is and are loaded when you run the program. You can exchange it with your friends or use some file-exchange software like dropbox or SVN to keep it updated for other persons who use it.

Markers split on:
Local - stored locally in your PC, visible only to you.
Guild - stored on server, visible to your guild. Can be removed/modified by owner or guild officers.
Alliance - stored on server, visible to entire allience. Can be installed by guild leaders, removed/modified by owner or alliance officers.
Global - stored on server, visible to all.

I suppose we may add more marker categories upon your feedbacks and requests.

Security:
The only way the program interacts with your computer is by saving/reading your markes from markers.xml file.
Data transmitted to server: program version, map tile requests.
Data received from server: version response, map tiles, markers.
If you feel paranoid about running non-microsoft software, you may run it using some virtual mashine. Some antiviruses like Comodo have both sandbox-modes and virtual mashine modes.
The program is not web-based but it consumes much less memory than any browser ;)

Troubleshooting:
No unsolved issues have been reported lately.

Screenshots:
Can you see the small island at 8:20?

There it is! :D

This is the island's highest elevation. Thought we should name it somehow different from just a "mountain".

If you want clean maps make them yourself :)

The cartographer can label his map anyway he chooses.

Maybe if they worked for the company that would be one thing.

You need a standalone exe.

No offense, but I don't do exe. files that connect to the internet.

No offence taken. I would guarantee if my word was worth something here. But at least I can answer your questons.

Thing is that:
1 - I don't know a free php scripter who could make a web service
2 - Does anyone have any idea how big and heavy the map is? And how should it then be updated in standalone?
3 - Currently it works and it works fine despite the efforts of those guys who tried to hack the server.
4 - We are planning to develep the project further by implementing additional modules like auction for example.

PS. Updated to 1.0.2
Fixed minor bugs.

Enjoy! And you are welcome.

We have registered a single error that could have resulted in tiles download failure. It looks like a black window with no map in it. Apologise for the possible inconvenent. Haven't figured out the reason and didn't manage to reproduce it, so please message me if something like this ever happens.

Added » 15 Apr 2014, 08:15

Current version: 1.0.3

Coordinates has been changed to meters. 2 meters for 1 ingame tile.
This way it should be easier to refer coordinates to a specific grid square.

Fixed minor bug with zoom value on program start.

Error mentioned above has been localised and fixed on server. Should not cause any troulbles anymore.
More features to be announced later. ;)

I am pretty much unable to use it as my antivirus is yelling that this application is pure evil. I can't even shut down it's process anyhow atm, so I will be forced to restart my PC. I will not use it again.

Sure thing you can't do anthing with a process if it is paralysed by the antivirus.

Since the map doesn't even connect to the server, it is either your OS, your Antivirus or you lack the knowledge how antivirus behaves with your system which is most obvious since you call it "pure evil" and the primitive process had forced you to restart the system

As I have said, it only requests the map tiles from the server. Yes, it is an outgoing connection though it is minimised to simple requests which can be easily monitored. The program itself does not need any access but to the markers.xml file in the same folder. Hope it can help to set it up if you are still insterested.
PS. Make sure you have the latest version.

Well it does work kinda, though I am getting some suspicious .NET framework error each time when I launch it.

My suggestion: Make an online map that doesn't have to be downloaded.

It would be nice to just have the whole map plain as one file you can DL and save.

Current Version: 1.0.6
Added error logging. error.log file is created in the same folder automatically in case some unexpected error occures (since all expected errors were fixed already). Please send me details if something happens.
Previous version stays available just in case.

Update to version 1.1.3.
Improved overall performance.
Fixed some perfomance bugs and changed network protocol in order to fit upcoming functionality. More updates to come soon.
Old client versions not compartible anymore due to the protocol changes, please update the client.

Arrakis09 wrote:Well it does work kinda, though I am getting some suspicious .NET framework error each time when I launch it.
Have managed to catch this issue - caused by different regional settings when reading the markers.xml file. Should be fixed now.

PS: Check out our updated heightmap ;)
25 meters elevation difference for each line.
Considering that each pixel equals 2 meters, you can determine the height angle. For example, if there are 12 pixels between 2 height lines, then it means that there are 24 meters horisontal and 25 elevation difference and that gives us 45 degrees elevation angle.

Ummm...
It seems that I get a strange message when trying to download your map:
"Chrome has blocked malicious file."
Should I be worried or is this just a bug?

It is just the Chrome. You should check the security settings. This map program goes without installation package and so, most security programs consider it suspicious.

Update to version 1.2.4
Network connection protocol upgraded.
Added support of upcoming features.

Markers are not split on:
Local - stored locally in your PC, visible only to you.

Alliance - stored on server, visible to entire allience. Can be installed by guild leaders, removed/modified by owner or alliance officers.

Alliance markers are still under construction.
Guild markers are working though the guild interface is still under construction. Should be available soon.
User registration/login is working though I'm not presentating it yet since any user has to be attatched to a guild manually.

Please update the client beacuse the connection protocol has been changed.. Thank you.

Update to version 1.2.6
Markers, height lines and server grid are now toggled through the menu.
Added the option to select types of markes to display. Now you can toggle them on/off.
Update to version 1.2.7
Heightlines fixed.

Update to version 1.2.8
Markers are no longer removed by Esc key.
Added 7th zoom level with 1:0.25 Pixel:Tile resolution.

We've generated it ourselves.
