LiF Custom Map

Post by Vassteel » 27 Oct 2014, 00:31

Im not sure what level of modding the devs are ok with but i was able to load in a Flat test map into the client/server.

I'm now in the process of messing around with Torque's map editing software and i was just wondering if anyone else might be interested in assisting in its development.

Currently my idea for this map is a densely forested mountain/valley terrain with a few rivers and lakes. Hardwood/food/silk trees in the valleys and pines and spruces higher up. The new map will also be considerably larger but i'll try to keep it reasonable. the idea is to make it big enough for a server with 64 and not feel constrained for space.

I'm open to suggestions on anything i should try and include or environment options while im building the map.

I really wonder how you did that :D I'm sorry, I can't be of any help, never could understand Torque3D, but I'll follow your work. Could you give a screenshot of your flat map ? Just wanna see !!

I was actually wondering what level the devs would be happy with myself. I'd advise to keep the map the same size though, as they have explicitly stated that YO will have the 3x3 km map limitation, and they will likely enforce that at some point.

Investigating custom maps has been on my to-do list for quite a while, but I assume LiF uses a custom-made data format for their maps? I haven't looked at it closely yet, but I imagined the vanilla Torque 3D engine uses a grayscale heightmap, which is essentially a 2D map, while LiF uses some sort of 3D format, since it also needs to store what kinds of substances are underground. Possibly it combines a 2D heightmap with extra data for what exists under it, or something like that.

Hence I assumed making custom maps would first require reverse engineering LiF's map data format. Or have you already done that?
