Hi there,

I just want to play alone but I'm not sure how the server works.
I go to "Create a world".
Fill in world name
set tab to private
Game mode : sandbox
max players on server : 1
Click on "start"

I get a server loading screen and after a while I enter the world.

Is that all I have to do?

Only problem I encountered so far, is when I log out, and back in my burning furnace has extinguised and the melting progress I made is gone (even when I log out for 5 sec and back in, the furnace (and all the melting progress I made is lost).

All my tunnels, buildings,etc are fine when relogging

It's normal. As the server is down (you are gone), the world stop, so your furnace stop.

IMO, you can't really play on solo mode. You can play alone but not in singleplayer mode as the world will stop everytime you disconnect.
For exemple, trees need about 3 IRL weeks to grow. So, you need to keep your game up for three weeks
