The boat topic, ideas, suggestions about boats mecanics

This topic is made to compile all cool possible and feasible ideas about futur boats, regarding the game engine, physics and existing game mecanics.
This post is not a "we need boats now!!" post, I know boats are a long terme feature and will come in later development, it is not the priority right now, it need a lot of rework and thought. One day we all hope we will have boats and all the great unique stuff that bring to the game.
But it's never too late, so let's do a brainstorming and a list.

    - First the boat construction and repair should be in carpentry skill. Nobody want to waste resources to craft thousand of boats to levelup a new skill.

    - i.e. lvl60 carpentry : you can build and repair small merchant ships, lvl90 : you can build and repair large merchant ships, lvl100 : you can build and repair warships.

    - boats should be an alternative to the merchant's cart pulled by a horse on a road for transporting goods on a long distance, but slower and relatively safer with a little more cargo capacity (i.e. 1500 for the small ship and 2000 for the large cargo ship).

    - boat should be constructed on a shore with one tile touching water, like in a Vicking way. They should not look like a small sign on the beach but a real shipyard's look with boat frame, beam, planks, barrels, tools and such.

    - maybe a new building can be created, the dock or shipyard. should be constructed half on land and half on sea, in your claim area. It can act like a construction site for boats and a small warehouse to easely unload cargo from the ships, waiting for transfer it to your main warehouse. If you decide to create a merchant guild or want to rules the sea, your kingdom's claim radius must extend to the water to protect your docks, or create a second small claim for your outside port.

    - the dock building can have a sufficiently long dock to accommodate several ships, so there is no need of terraforming into water to create such dock.

    - maybe add racial boats to give choice, e.g. a Cog type for Gotlung and a longship or Drakkar type for Slavard.

    - cargo ship have a superior cargo capacity, are less resistant and can embark less mens to row so have a slower speed. A warship have a much lower cargo capacity (like 500 stones only), are more resistant, but can have more mens to row and can be a little faster (like 20 warriors + a driver).

    - boats can transport all type of goods and item (cattle, horses, stone, granit, soil ect...)

    - ships can benefit from a speed bonus if you have multiple mens to row, like the actual combat group mecanic, the more rower you have the more speed bonus you can get. That have to be balanced to not make it to fast anyway.

    - boat can be handle by one person only by sails, one driver, but additionnal men to row position can buff speed. (and can defend your ship against pirates or ennemy guilds).

    - ships should display the banner of you guild on sails and flag of course.

    - boats can be limited in number possessed (max to 8-10 ?)depend on your claim or kingdom level, in that way large guilds can have a bigger fleet, and this avoid multiplication of boats to infinite. Of course any other boat captured or found will add to your kingdom limitation. If a boat is to low quality or over limit, the guild's leader can destroy it.

    - this can be a way for in-game paid content to raise your fleet's limit number.

    - the hability to sound a horn from a ship (with a cooldown) to warn of your arrival from long distance or to spread fear among your enemies. Maybe it can give some sort of bonus, like archers reload speed and such.

    - boats should be vulnerable to fire arrows or siege arrows, but can't be sunk to easily by a dozen of archers. Damage resistance have to be well balanced.

    - a half damaged boat should show a damaged texture with damaged planks or damaged sails, with some cracking ambiant sounds. It should also be a little slower than a pristine ship.

    - proper physics and damage collision with other ships, damage collision with rocky shores, except for sandy or clay shores.

    - proper physics with players and boat to be able to move freely on the deck if not attach to the row or the rudder.

    - the hability to board other ships, player can jump to an ennemy ship to fight like you do on land.

    - remove the hability to drop item on the boat's deck to avoid extra transportation exploit and movable stuff. Overburdened player should be cautious.

    - Boats should not be able to transport containers like chest, wardrobe and cart to avoid exploit in stacking extra merchant cart on top.

    - the hability to transfer items from the cargo to your inventory when sailing.

    - the hability to jump on ship from swimming position, either to mount aboard your own ship or mount aboard ennemy ship by surprise.

    - if a ship sunk the players on board just drop on water can swim to the nearest shore. If any player is overburdened they drown. Player who want to act as an extra cargo mule for your ship must consider the risk he take in case of sinking or bad encounter. Like in feudal times it is safer to travel close of shores, good swimmer are rare. Traveling in the middle of the ocean/river must be at your risks and peril.

    - arrows can be fired from ship of course like it should in any naval battle.

    - really bad windy and rainy weather encountered in one server can have an effect on ship by dealing some small damage or add attrition.

    - boat should take attrition damage depending on the distance traveled. Have to be well balance for a proper repair mecanic.

    - boats can be repaired by a carpenter when it dock on a friendly shore or dock/port. Carpenter could simply bring hardwood planks and some nails to repair the ship.

    - introduce some docking permission for allies or docking taxe.

    - a boat abandonned at sea should suffer normal attrition unless it is sailed by a player.

    - a boat in your claim or allied claim will not suffer attrition.

    - an abandonned boat left on the shore should remain in your guild property for an hour (timer). The time required maybe to raid some village or doing a battle against your ennemy fortress. That to prevent anybody to come and easily steal your precious ship after a couple of minute like horses.

    - new crafting recipes for boat, it will need cords, linen cloth for sails, harwood planks and beam, specific wood parts like keel and mast or sculpted figure head, metal parts (bands, nails ect...), small iron anchor, bone-glue, shields for warships.

    - this can be a way to reintroduce the sawmill to be able to craft specific big wood parts like mast and keel. Those parts can required for exemple a large amount of wood, like 800 or 1200 hardwood for a keel or a mast, so you have to choose a full grown quality oak's trunk for only one piece. In this way only medium or large guilds will be able to build boats. A simple order can't but can buy it or steal it.

    - can introduce new recipes for materials preparation skill to make wood tar from pine and spruce soft wood billet to cook on a fireplace with a pot to extract tar. So the boat's builder will depend on many jobs to be able to build a good boat (mat. prep., forge, carpentry, procuration and farming).

    - find a way to relog properly if a player get disconnected on board of a moving ship. The relog could stick to the ship ID even if it has move away (this can be exploit? i don't know). Or if the ship get sank, player should relog on water maybe with an anti-drown buff timer of 2 minutes to be able to safely swim to the nearest coast (this is why it is safer to sail close to the land). A good swimmer has a better chance to survive in this case so the swimming skill will be more important now.
