This would add realism and take some of the stress out of taking care of most animals. In real life sheep, cows and horses get most of their food from fields of grass. So I am suggesting either adding two more buildings that would work with barns and stables, or replacing barns and stables completely with paddocks. The paddock would not entirely feed your animals but decrease the food consumption by 75%-90%. A regular paddock could be around 6x4 or 5x5 tiles and feed up to 10 sheep, 5 cows, or 6 horses. While the large paddock could be about 5x13 or 8x8 tiles and feed up to 20 sheep, 10 cows, or 12 horses. Visually the buildings would be a fenced in field of grass with a small run in shed.( the type of building a stable is)

That will work fine until your base is raided and all your animals are killed for target practice :)

no the animals would not be ingame walking around the field I think that would cause to much lag and like you were saying allow them to be killed easily.

if you intend to increase realism, you must go the whole way, not just picking raisins ;-)

either you make the paddocks with moving animals, or no paddocks. By the way, I hope they will be implemented also in the stables, soon.
You could also have stables and paddocks parallel, with stables providing more protection for your animals, while increasing food consumption ( compared to the paddocks, just as it is now)

Of course i like the idea, as i have made a similar request (Pastures).
But i am not entirely sure about the terminology here...
For me a paddock is something like this:
    http://www.reiterhof-kruse.de/assets/images/Paddock1.jpg

"A paddock is a small enclosure used to keep horses. The most common design provides an area for exercise and is often situated near the stables."

Anyways, animals should have more needs than just food. I have written a comment about this in my request.. they should require food, water, exercise and space.
A paddock could be used to provide more exercise and space for horses and to train them for military and agricultural services and of course to saddle them. But they only make sense in combination with a stable.

For feeding and exercise purposes for all the tamed animals you would need a pasture (fenced grassland). For sheep you could actually introduce a sheepdog and have them roam the area around your barn freely.
