Buffs are iffy but for RP and what not instruments are nice. And who can say no to a horn to blow when manning a wall on guard duty, or to terrify you victims during a surprise raid.
in the history music was used to buff !! to fight against fear so a small braveness buff would be realistic. but almost i like this because music was the possibility to tell stories and news in the past
and of course a beer is nothing without live music ))
I think that for roleplay this is necessary, like in LOTRO. Could be nice to program a song by choosing tour own tones.
1 more suggestion : when a bard is playing a song, he can select 1 or many dances that fits and the players that will listen can choose this dance (for example a circle dance holding the hands)
Like cert said, LOTRO got it right. I can code my songs into a txt file and run through an in game command or even hook up to a midi keyboard and start playing, this is what music ought to be like! I can just imagine playing "The Gael" or "A Gift of Thistle" on my lute :3
I like the idea of having drummer boys with a positive aura for their own faction in battle. Maybe they could also bear battle standards and banners! Wandering bards should also be able to give some buffs to people as they work. Maybe it helps slow down stamina decay?

Music in battles were important in real life too as some of you already said. It encourages soldiers and make synergy between them via rhythm. So maybe it can help with formations and increase formation buffs?
This needs to be implemented! Bards were an essentially part of the Middle Ages and were welcomed by both King and common man to sing songs and tell tales. Having instruments that play music, perhaps for a hard stamina regen buff, would be perfect for workers coming to the inn after a long day of work. Perhaps even inspirational tales for the warriors to give them a strength boost! So many possibilities.
