-1There is no way to possibly open a gate from horseback unless an electric motor and remote is involved. A fortress is bound to have more than just one or two inhabitants. Get help to open the gate or get off the horse and do it yourself. A manned gate for large settlements during busy hours is not a bad way to go. Lot easier to defend and watch the gate so noone hostile can sneak in. -

It's even not realistic to open the gatehouse from outside even when you're not on your horse.
When you argue like this, then gates shouldn't be opened from outside alone!
So it doesn't matter - but it's much more better for the game flow when you're riding..., open gatehouse, ride through, close gatehouse.
Technically speaking you can't open the gatehouse from outside alone, cause in Medieval you just can open gatehouses from inside. -

and when you're walking with no horse ? You open from outside with your fingerprint in a technological sensor ????
You open from outside because it's your guild's gate and gardians open to you. It's the same when on a horse. They see you, they open. -
