I like the game, but I made a mistake: I decided to build a castle at the top of a hill and my village. Ok, it wasn’t really a mistake, I only wanted to know if it works and how. Because a castle has to be on a hill, the village can be downwards.
And of course I was faced with restrictions. Of course. So the conclusion are some ideas I want to bring in.
restraining walls
direct terraforming of rock
Catacombs
Others (already proposed earlier)
1. Restraining walls
I had the idea to make a nice place for my holy monument, shown in the following picture. This also shows my problem: The gap between the stone walls and the ground of the terraformed place designed as a balcony cannot be closed. The diagonal wall can’t filled up if on the inner side of the wall cause of the blocked ground.
edit: I found an incomplete solution by using clay to close the gap, but that isn’t my real intention.
Middle age castles often have not only stone walls, they have restraining walls to secure the sides of the hill and the castle and to help to get a little bigger area on top for building.
Some examples from reality you can find everywhere in the world.
I made many designs and simulations on paper and PC … and finally came back to a very simple idea of restraining walls:
This is the simple bottom tile of the stonewall. It should allow easy positioning by sinking into the ground on top of the next tile. But of course fully to build with stones and clay.
Features:
Square and diagonal,
Stackable
Build on top (next tile of restraining wall, stonewall, merlons and catwalks like proposed earlier, buildings,….). This would also allow modular walls like inner corner stone walls and others earlier proposed too.
merlons and catwalks separated
merlons and catwalks:
And we can prevent situations like this:
2. Direct terraforming rock/slate
The problem is shown in the following picture:
You dig rock, wait for falling the tunnel that fills with soil. What? The rock becomes soil? Nice, because rock doesn’t fall really or only in erodet parts or after blasting and should not create blocked tiles like soil, stones or clay. But the actual gamemode does just this. The bottom of the original soilfree made rocky wall is now blocked cause of magic conversion of rock to soil.
Why I cannot build on a by digging leveled surface of rock or slate with only the open wonderful sky above me and the ground?
Ok ok, if you build down in the lower parts of the island you don’t need this. How could I play so far sideways of the common gameplay. But I already told my crazy intention.
Therefore I suggest the direct terraforming of rock with ability to build on top.
3. Catacombs
We can dig tunnels and secure them for a dedicated time using wooden boards, after this time they fall. So my head asked me: what if we use stone for pillars and be able to create catacombs under the castle? Secured store rooms there in the catacombs? A dungeon? A well there too? And what if we can build cross-vaults? Wow…
4. Other suggestions I would like to have too:
- Interior lightning
- modular buildings /walls
- drawbridges
