In early stage, player need tons of new resources, and they might even need to move to a new place, they could build a barn and a storage room in that place in order to expand further, but personally I think it's not enough.
Stockpile is easy to build(just clear all obstacles) and greatly increase workers efficiency, think about it, if I'm gonna build a storage building far away from home, if I use a stockpile and store enough resource for building it, it'll take much less time than making villagers travelling across different places.
Stockpile should be some early-game mechanics, they'll occupy lots of spaces, but still worthy during expanding/early game resource gathering.

0Would be nice to have somewhere to store masses of heavy objects like shaped rocks, clay tiles and both softwood and hardwood billets, so you're not stockpiling heaps of raw materials that needs to go through the entire route of refining processes (chopping wood, dragging wood, making billets, just to get the furnace going finding ore, mining ore hauling ore, smelting ore then of course yada yada you get the idea) every time you need to make a new iron tool. because in early game you dont have anything that can store those things. -
