Terraforming on grass or walking over it extensively should make it become dirt, this includes animals. Walking over dirt extensively or using shovel to pack grass or dirt should make it become packed dirt. Dirt should grow into grass quickly while packed dirt should grow into grass over a much longer period of time. In order to build a structure, it must be placed on packed dirt. Afterwards the packed dirt should grow back to grass overtime.
