Privately hosted servers will always be different than an MMO. I've already mentioned one example above, such as having stricter rules like roleplay. Some others include, being able to tweak the game into functioning differently, such as leveling skills faster, not having decay, and so on. But it really doesn't have to end there, would be great if we could mod servers and further change the game to the server owner's liking. These are things that you wont see on a MMO game where things are vanilla and stay that way indefinitely. The most I've seen in MMO's were addon mods which added neat things that weren't a form of exploiting or cheating. Check WoW for addons to see what I'm talking about.
Remember also that maintaining a server population so big requires a good server host and if they have the computer or money to host something like that, then I don't see why not. Having 150+ players is still very different than 10,000. I wouldn't be surprised if I'd play both when the MMO gets released. Another thing to add, Wurm Unlimited has servers capped to 255 players. In my opinion, Life is Feudal was always the better game, but yet, it's limiting us way more.

ah, and, what do you consider when : I really hope the cost of a character transfer for the MMO version is the same amount that I've spent on this game,

Many people on steam were leaving negative reviews saying how Life is Feudal: Your Own was a way of this company making enough money to build up the MMO part of it. Honestly, it seems a lot like it and I wouldn't be surprised if that's why we're all invited to the MMO when it gets released. Therefore I'd be more happy if it costs around $35 for a character to move to the MMO which is about the money I spent on this game. If this limited population is preventing us from staying on Life is Feudal: Your Own, then this is no point of this game in my honest opinion. The player cap of 64 is extremely low for a game like this. I mean I should be asking for 300 player cap, some games have caps of 2,000+.
