"Buildable Rivers"

138
Hey everyone,

I think that Buildable Rivers, aka Water that flows through lower terrain would be a great addition to the atmosphere and to the gameplay. You, wouldn't have to walk to a river for hours, you could simply build a river once, or they could be spawned randomly, and get your water from that. I know that you can build a well for that, but I think the game atmosphere would be even better with some water flowing through your settlement/village/town etc.

It would be nice to be able to drop water like soil to create waterways. Moats :)

Well, I think that It won't affect performance if you just add flowing as sound and not as detailed animation at the beginning.

I really like the idea of having streams and rivers that flow down from mountains. Though that I don't find it realistic to drop water to create these.

How about some kind of heightmap for water (in spite of the totally flat sea level we already have) that is similar to the one we already have for land. You would have water everywhere where the land is beneath the surface.
This way you could have natural flowing water and high lakes, and if you want to create one yourself you can dig a trench for that purpose.(Maybe the water level should be affected by terraforming so that digging a canal to a lake is more effective than digging a hole and such things.)

Very good ideas indeed! This especially makes digging moats a really compelling option for fortification!

Plus it goes hand and hand with the sawmill. Poor sawmill looks weird with a water wheel sticking in the ground and makes even less sense to build it on the beach.

Just have a couple of 'springs' height in the mountains, non-terraformable, and then let the water find it's way, it will flow to the sea and it anybody is able to reroute it trough terraforming.

Should not effect performance tbh, if you look at the dynamic water effects on a simple and not so pretty ether game as Landmark, then water should not be a problem. Given current stability though I suppose the game could first use some optimising before adding said feature. But IMO diverting rivers/making streams and offshoots for irrigation and prettyfication purposes seems like a must rather then a should we.. does it not?

I strongly agree with 'kooswillem' post to have springs up in the mountain and let water find it's way down, from there you can dig a trench to your settlement letting the water also run your way.

Make fishing for trout only possible in rivers close to the mountain, as trout always travels up stream once a year, the rest of the year they are in deep sea.

On that note to make waterways to your town it would also be a nice idea to have a trench surrounding your castle walls and have a drawbridge kind of gate expanding over the water trench.

Great idea. Building rivers with addition of boats would be great and realistic way of transport goods.

I'll add my vote to this one, especially kooswillem's idea of having springs up in the mountain and being able to influence the water's path by terraforming, and rjmspoel's addition also sounds fantastic. If the game physics allow for such thing, please please please think about implementing it! ;)

This would require quite a bit of work on the current water implementation, time which could be spent on more important things.
Currently it's a single plane that pans across the entire map. You're talking about water that can interact with individual tiles and possibly even in-world entities.

Definitely a neat idea though. You have my vote.
