Artillery & Siege equipment.

Post by Wigster600 » 25 Feb 2014, 21:25

Things like Siegetowers, cats, catapults, battering rams, wall/tower mounted engines, trebuchets ect.

Thoughts? :D Bear in mind for catapults to be of special use, buildings could have stages of desturction, like bits fall off when the health of the structure drops below certain points.

Yes, yes. The devs have plans on multiple types of siege engines down the road.

Awesome of course if it can be in there, but I know these things can be giant pains in the ass to implement without being total disasters, especially in a free form environment.

Some are more doable than others, a battering ram for instance shouldn't pose too many issues from a coding side - you build it, it rolls along the ground and when you place it in front of a gate you can do damage to that gate every pull.

Things like catapults and destructable walls, and siege towers, I think pose many more issues from a coding and implementation side - not impossible, but probably should come AFTER everything else works and even AFTER stuff like battering rams, etc which are likely to be easier to implement.

Other things that would be easier to implement are balistas you can set up on walls or on the ground that just are like a giant crossbow with a lot of damage but take a long time to reload. Rocks or logs you could roll off of walls at attackers could be ok too.

----

No matter what, these items with their destructive power need to be something that is assembled in the field (cannot be carried in a backpack!!!!) are slow to build and take a lot of coordinateion/resources to build, and are somewhat easily destroyed.

Siege camp buildings would be cool too.

The siege towers could work like the rams, be pushable, and have a platform that lowers until horizontal as some extra reach to get over the wall, all could have parts carried to the site and constructed in a siege camp. :)

Well, yeah that is how they would work...but getting them to do that is another issue since the terrain is freeform - there's lots of potential for glitchyness, but hopefully they can pull it off!

Anyhow, a siege tower is easier to implement than the catapult/destructable walls thing.

Well that could be part of the siegeworks, a ramp made or earth which the tower uses to get to the wall, I'm sure the romans did something like that once.

330. Will ladders be included as part of the siege weaponry?
Yes, sometime later

331. Will there be defensive fortifications added to castles to increase the difficulty of being invaded? Things like burning oil being placed above the doors to be poured onto battering rams and such like that?
might be, yet again, sometime later.
They are planning some serious diversity for siege equipment, we'll see it eventually :)
