Oh I'm aware that's chainmail in the knight picture but the helm is fullplate. Most similar in form to Gottlung skin of the fullplate helm. And of course the viking pictures you posted have some heavier armor but it looks nothing like this:

That is the armor unlocked by the berserker skill in LiF.

My point is detach defense from offense skills. Make armor separate from combat style. Let cavalry effectively use fullplate as desired, berserkers wear scale, chain, padded or leather or people mix multiple types or armor to their heart's content as commonly happened. And let them do it without having to give up all their skillpoints to another tree they may not even want anything else from.

Armor choices should be based on three factors. Protection, mobility, and cost. Letting people make their decisions purely based on those factors by removing skills from the equation isn't unbalancing in any way IMO. It's how those decisions were actually made IRL.

People might say "Oh if they do that I'll wear fullplate everywhere." And all I can say to that is I look forward to selling your fullplate after ambushing you with a group of lightly armored archers who kite you to death. One of my guys has already defeated a player in fullplate with no armor and a sling. And even if they have archers in fullplate (which sound terrible against infantry and cavalry) how much more does it cost to gear those than the light leather wearing combatants I can zerg them down with?

EDIT: I will say though one thing I would like to see if they implement this is attack speed and movement speed penalties more based on the area of the body the armor is on. For instance plate gloves would give major archery penalties and bulkier armors on the arms and hands would give more attack speed penalties in general. Legs/feet would also have more effect on movement speed.

So you might see more armor setups like this:

Where people put heavier armor on the torso and head but leave limbs less guarded to allow greater mobility. In that particular image it appears to be a half plate helm with a chainmail body and padded limb armor.
