Kiln management

Post by Uno » 24 Sep 2014, 12:46

Hello,
I have a question about managing a kiln. I play with a group where some of us with enough construction material skill have tried using a kiln without success, because when we push the "use bellows" button nothing happens.
We have discovered that if we ask other village mates with metalworking skills to click the kiln (without actually managing it, they receive an error because they don't have a glassblowing tool or constr. material skill) the temperature immediatly goes up.
Question is what skill allows you to properly manage (the temperature of) a kiln, I assume in the prospecting branch, and isn't it a bit awkward that someone that has the correct profession to manage a kiln is hopeless unless they train skills in a different profession just to be able to "use bellows" (even a kid could do it) while any blacksmith passing by can raise its temperature with the "magic touch" of his foot?

We've noticed this as well.

You need smelting to be able to manage the bellows on anything it seems. It's a bug. It's construction as you say which can actually use the kiln.

Just an FYI, if you're trying to make charcoal you don't need to use the bellows at all (not sure if it's quicker or not if you do). You just leave the billets in there long enough and you'll get the option to "pull out" which will pop up a box and you can select charcoal (according to my guildie who's got construction who's been making lots of charcoal; I'm a smelter).

You're right but be aware that just leaving it will burn through the billets if you don't watch and pull them out when necessary. True at any temp but just so you don't wander to far while waiting at less temp
