Kingdom Of Baldoria (Roleplay Encouraged)

The Kingdom of Baldoria
A Community based on Realism and Immersion

Overview:

Baldoria is a realm somewhere within the land of Life is Feudal. Where exactly it lies is of course undecided and will not come until the Baldorian community finally settles in game once the game is launched. This article serves a few purposes. Firstly and perhaps most importantly, to define a foundation for the community and to strike interest in the hearts of like minded players.

The Realm of Baldoria is a highly immersive community. It is designed with story driven aspects in mind, and will remain thusly very story driven well through its lifespan in LIF (Long live Baldoria!). It is a home that is both directed at role players and non-role players alike. Why did we not go strictly PVP or why not strictly Roleplay? The answer is simple. Immersion is not exclusive only to roleplayers, and roleplayers are not entirely exclusive to immersion. There is a place for players of each kind to fit within the community of Baldoria. And even if many of the players are not roleplayers themselves, and prefer not to necessarily partake in all the IC events, their role is still very essential to the community and helps give it life.

Am I a roleplayer? Yes. I would be defined even as a heavy role player. Story based content is actually much of what drives me to continue to play games well after the content on my hard drive becomes lacking. But I believe there is a balance that can be struck here that will make everyone involved happy and feel that they are a vital member to what I hope to be a very large and ultimately thriving community.

So what is it that Baldoria ultimately aims for?

Immersion.

Realism.

Baldoria aims to simulate every aspect of medieval society that is vital for a culture to thrive. From the political aspect of medieval culture, to the social aspect. From those who tend their hands to the fields, to those who tend them to the sword. If you are a hardcore PVP enthusiast, the Baldorian military can use you to defend the lands that Baldorians call home. If you tend to enjoy crafting then Baldoria can reap the benefits of your labor and reward you in turn. If you are a shrewd entrepreneur or politician then play the most dangerous game that this world can offer and choose loyalty or deception, whichever brings you closer to power and glory.

Social Structure

Royal House
Monarch

Eventually the realm of Baldoria will have a Monarch. That Monarch will be decided at a Kingsmeet by the Lords of the Realm.

Hand of the King
Yes, this may be a tip of the hat to the Song of Ice and Fire series, but lets be honest. In a world where people have a lot of other things to do then spend their entire time behind a computer screen, it is always a great thing to have someone to fall back on for big decisions when the King cannot be around. The hand is the King’s voice when he is not available and has the full authority of the King in his absence.

The Royal Council
The third and final voice if the King and his hand is absent. The Royal Council is hand picked among the noble lords and masters of the realm. More importantly they serve as the King’s wisest advisors, strategists and tacticians.

Master of War – A strategist and tactician chosen by the King to aid in military endeavors with their deep knowledge in strategy and tactics.

Master of Ships – Same as above, but in this case the Master of Ships commands the King’s Navy.

Master Treasurer – A master of finance and economy. The master treasurer helps advise the spending of the Kingdom treasury. Taxes will be a real thing and a necessity for running a Kingdom. And the Master Treasurer will be responsible for documenting the Kingdom expenses and making sure the treasury never runs dry.

Master of Trade – In a game environment where resources are scattered amongst many locales, the trade of the Kingdoms wares for things that the Kingdom lacks will be of great importance. The Master of Trade’s purpose is to make the King’s council aware of the needs for certain projects and as well, potential allies to be made business partners, or enemies that have something vital to the realms needs that may need to be taken by force.

Master of Agriculture – Food is a vital resource for keeping the populace happy, thriving, and healthy. The master of agriculture can help devise plans for agricultural growth and as well advise importance of the Kingdom’s food pool. Will food need to be rationed? Will there have to be a stronger effort on harvesting the land of its natural fruits to provide for the overall Kingdom’s prosperity?

Master of Secrets – Military strategy, economical strategy, and financial strategy all have a very important beneficiary that play a hand in all of it. Intelligence. The Master of Secrets primary task is to find the secrets of the enemies, and in some cases, the allies to the crown of Baldoria. Both foreign and domestic. Whether it is important trade routes, supply lines, siege defenses or weaknesses, or important caches of resources, there is much information to be had of the world around the Kingdom of Baldoria that can be instrumental in seeing to the success of the Kingdom as a whole

The Kingsguard
The Kingsguard is a special office that reports only to the King himself. These men are chosen from the realm for their legendary prestige in combat, their valor and chivalry, and their loyalty to the crown. There are nine Kingsguard. Eight who are commanded by one Lord Commander. The Lord Commander is never very far from the King, and the King will often advise them for council. These are considered to be the most elite warriors in all the land and are oathsworn into service.

Captains – Soldiers who have been granted a rank of leadership among military forces. These warriors lead skirmishes and also help see to the training and assist either High Officer of War in their supervisory tasks.

Office of Ships – The Royal Navy
Admirals – These men are proven commanders who lead fleets of ships to do the bidding of the crown. They are the highest officers, second to the Master of Ships himself who is in charge of the entire royal navy.

Captains – Secondary commanders who command individual ships. They are expected to act cohesively to the command of their commanding admiral.

Office of the Treasury
Accountants – Accountants can be assigned to monitor the spending of the treasury and to keep a recording of all transactions to and from the Royal Treasury.

Guild Masters – The office of trade appoints many guild masters who work to ensure the stores of the Kingdom are not want for resources, such as armor, weaponry, and other important equipment. They can be a privateering franchise that is contracted by the crown, and ultimately see that the needs for trade, or for the Kingdom’s own personal needs are met.

The Nobility
The nobility are the next social class beneath Royalty and the members of the Royal Offices. They are men and women who have proven their valor to the crown and are granted land within the realm to partake in their own endeavors and enterprises.

However, in return for these gifts, they are expected to serve the crown and provide muscle in times of war, resources, and taxed income to their liege King.

Nobles are given sovereign rule over their people under their service and are expected to uphold the King’s laws within their lands. They also govern and militarize the region in which they are stationed.

High Lords – A high lord is given station over lesser houses who are their sworn bannermen. They are the supreme law of the realms in which they govern and answer only to the King, The Hand, and the Royal Council.

Banner Lords – A banner lord is given station to rule small settlements and fiefs that answer to a High Lord that is the ruler of the region these settlements are stationed in. They are sworn to the service of their High Lord and will go to their Liege Lord for domestic matters, rather than travelling to the King’s Court for resolution.

Knightly Houses – These are the upstart lords who have proven their valor through their service to the crown. They answer to the High Lord of their region, but are not considered as prestigious as banner lords.

The Gentry
The Gentry are prestigious people who have proven valuable members to medieval society. They can be anything from esteemed merchants, to formidable guild masters, to commanders of knightly orders. They are not recognized nobility, but are favored among the lords and ladies of their realm. They report to the Banner Lords or Knights who see over the settlement in which they reside. They are considered to be above the station of commoners or peasants.

The Peasantry
The peasantry is the lowest social rank of Baldorian culture. They do not have any real rights and are expected to serve the lords of their realm as the Lord sees fit. The peasantry goes to the Lord’s court for concerns and issues affecting their welfare. They are expected to serve with unyielding loyalty.

Primary Religion in Baldoria

Lord of Lords, and the Eight Disciples

The Creator

The Creator is God, and God is the Creator. What his true name may be is not understood or known by any mortal that roams the earth. Whether he is divine, or a myth that man chose to believe in, they have called him the Creator, and the Lord of Lords, his true identity only known by the Eight Disciples that serve him (Demi-Gods). The Creator is often depicted as a Titan with Eight Arms, each hand carrying a tool of each of his disciples.

The Lord
In the Creator's uppermost right hand sits the balance and scale for which all judgement comes from. His greatest and highest ranked disciple, The Lord, also stands as the Creator's Judgement. The leadership of the people.

The Lord is the Disciple of Judgement, and often depicted as the greatest of the Disciples. Many Lords of the Realm visit his Shrine in the sanctuary and will light candles to him. They will pray for his guidance. Often he is prayed to for judgement. When a trial by combat is called upon by man, when there is no evidence of a crime committed, it is strongly believed that the warrior who wins the Trial by Combat is proven true in the eyes of the Lord.

The Lady

In the Creator's uppermost left arm, the Creator cradles a baby, a symbol of the Lady. She is the mother of all, the Disciple of Fertility, and stands beside the Lord as his companion.

The Lady is prayed to by many, and perhaps more so than the other disciples. She is prayed to for fertility, for the illness of little ones, she is prayed to by mothers, and fathers alike as she is the mother of all things living.

The Mason

In the Creator's second highest right hand, is held the mallot. It is a symbol of The Mason, who's hands molded the beginnings of all civilization.

The Mason is the third Disciple of the Eight, who is portrayed as the foundation for new beginnings. He is prayed to by merchants, craftsman, builders, and all sorts of men and women, that his hands will guide theirs in achieving perfection in their craft.

The Maiden

In the Creator's second highest left hand, is held the rose. It is a symbol of The Maiden and her beauty. She brought color to a world of darkness, and from her eyes, resonates love that is undying and unending.

The Maiden is prayed to perhaps the most by young maidens and girls searching the world for the fabled love that is told of in fairytales and old legends. The pray to her for beauty that they will grow to be beautiful as she is. They may pray that she turns the heart of some Lord's son. Typical girl stuff.

The Champion

The Third right hand that is held, the Titan, is the Sword, a symbol of the Champion. He is the disciple of battle, and the Brother of the Warden. He is prayed to by warriors, most often before going to war.

The Champion is said to be the Brother of the Warden, two of the same brood, who face battle with two different approaches. The Champion aims to conquer, while the Warden aims to protect.

The Warden

The Third left hand that is held, the Titan, is the Shield, a symbol of the Warden. He is the disciple of protection, and the Brother of the Champion. He is prayed to by many warriors and guardians, most often before War comes to their homelands.

The Warden is said to be the Brother of the Champion, two of the same brood, who face battle with two different approaches. The Champion aims to conquer, while the Warden aims to protect. The Warden, unlike the Champion is not prayed to by mostly men and soldiers, but also women. Many wives will light a candle to the Warden, praying for the Warden to return their sons and husbands safely to them from the war.

The Vagabond

The final hand of the Creator's right, is held the Lantern that guides the Night. The Lantern is a symbol of the Vagabond, who is considered the Disciple of Exploration and Navigation.

The Vagabond is depicted as a robed wanderer with a lantern in his hand. He is prayed to by explorers and travellers, and men and women that are preparing for long journeys. He is also prayed to for wisdom and guidance, when the future is unknown.

The Faceless

The final hand of the Creator's left, is held the void, the symbol of death. The void is depicted as an empty hand, and a symbol of the unknown, and the Faceless one.

The Faceless one is not prayed to by many, and is considered the disciple of death and deception. He is depicted very similarly to the Vagabond, but is instead faceless.

Laws of the Book of the Nine

Religious Law
Sanctity of Blood
The Book of the Nine teaches that blood is sacred. As such, the religious and common law of Baldoria imposes both instances of agnatic primogeniture and male-preference cognatic primogeniture as the common laws of succession. The crown itself is succeeded by agnatic law, while laws of succession that are passed down to the nobility follow in suite of male-preferred cognatic primogeniture. The crown will be succeeded to a male of the royal house, if even not directly descended from the King of the last rule. So even if a King should die and have a female child that remains of their legacy, and no sons, the crown will be passed on to the next of kin that is male, such as a brother, or nephew, in rank of eldest to youngest.
For Nobility, male preferred primogeniture succession limits women to succeed their father if only there is no direct heir of his that is male. They will be in line before uncles, nephews, or male cousins, but not before their brothers. Whom they shall choose to marry will become the Lord of their house and the house will take the name of their lawfully wedded.
Because of the Sanctity of Blood laws, Kinslaying is considered a great sin, one that is punishable by death at the King’s decree. It is also a sin that is greatly abhorred by the pious. Even if the king should exonerate a man or woman guilty of such a crime, that legacy is likely to haunt them till the end of their days.

Sanctity of Marriage

The book of the Nine supports the act of monogamous marriage where a man shall marry one and only one woman. Marriage is often arranged long before children come of age to secure alliances or pacts, and is very much a political act and not one of love. However, marriage is considered a sacred act, one that is bound by oath. The act of adultery (specifically, directed towards women) is one that is considered a great sin and the breaking of an oath. Though death is forbidden to a noble adulterer, woman specifically are usually scorned by society for their acts, and like an exonerated kinslayer, will live most of their days in the shadow of their sin, and the scrutiny of their peers.

Some additional laws that follow under the Sanctity of Marriage law:

Bastardry – Bastards are children born out of wedlock. By religious laws a bastard cannot inherit a nobleman’s claim unless that Lord should announce them a trueborn, and petition from the King for that bastard to be recognized as a trueborn son. Only a King can perform this act and exonerate a bastard of their bastard birth.
Bastards are also often looked upon with scorn and scrutiny among other peers of the nobility. A noble born bastard that has been claimed by their lord father is very much above the station of a peasant, but are not quite considered an equal among the peerage.

Law of Sovereignty

The law of Sovereignty indicates that sovereign rule is not only a governmental institution of man, but as well, an institution made divine by the Gods. As such, the Book of the Nine supports that Sovereign rule is as important as religious law and dictates that a King’s word is law and is to be obeyed. A king and his bloodline is sacred, and Kingslaying is both an act of treason, and an act that is unexonerable. This includes the act of killing a King of a foreign nation. The only exception being in war in one on one combat by an unyielding King. If a King of a foreign nation should yield in combat, he is protected by religious law. Depending on their compliance, they are considered an esteemed hostage that is granted much better accommodations to their captivity than a normal prisoner of war.
Sovereignty is passed down by agnatic succession and bloodline.

Sanctity of Oath
Much as blood is a sacred bond, so it is also true with an oath. Any man who makes an oath sworn in the light of their gods shall be held to that oath until death. To forswear or break an oath is a serious sin and crime and can be punishable by death.

Religious Commandments :
These are the core tenants of the Church of the Nine that one is expected to live by:
1. Thou shall not worship false gods or forsake their faith.
2. Thou shall not murder; nor take another’s life without righteous cause.
3. Thou shall not steal, nor take that which is not justly due them.
4. Thou shall not lie, even if truth leads to death.
5. Thou shall not commit to adultery, or break their oath of marriage
6. Thou shall respect and obey thy king and keep his peace.
7. Thou shall protect thy fellow faithful.
8. Thou shall honor thy mother, thy father, and thy family.

That was a really good read. Well crafted lore and political system. Where can I sign up?

Also shouldn't this be in the Guild Recruitment thread?

Recruitment will be going live soon, once the official thread is up and the website. Send me a PM though for any details and we can begin collaborating on ideas.
