Melee Surprisingly Good

Post by Stormsblade » 01 Oct 2014, 00:15

Now that I have dug my fingers into it, its quite good.
There some imbalance in damage between weapon types, but the bleeding system and the difficulty to hit makes for long, fun, good fights.

I would suggest that only a few weapons need to be looked at in terms of "hit zone", namely the 2h axes and maces.

Spears and Pikes aren't finished yet, so shouldn't be judged.

I agree, once people get past using stone tools they'll also realize like I a did.

How does damage of metal weapons compare to stone ones?

I've enjoyed the combat system so far, but it's difficult to find PvPers so I don't know that much yet.

Pitchfork does 12-30 pierce, plus large chance to bleed.
Greatsword does about the same in slashing.

Pikes can do more, but are much much harder to use.
1h swords do about 9-18, low bleed chance.
1h pierce do about 12-24, low bleed chance.
Spears are almost exactly the same as a pitchfork.

You more often take down an enemy by them bleeding than through pure damage. This may be because players are largely using lighter armors right now.

Agreed, the melee system is pretty great.

I understand why they make the crap tools more or less unusable for melee. But I think they're taking the wrong route while doing so.
The current system put a very bad light on the melee system as new players will just end up thinking it's actually not working (since it's very hard to hit at all with some tools) I would suggest either keeping the tool damage or lowering it a bit but setting the tools up to have better hit detection so people don't think the game is completely broken and leave before they finally can make a metal weapon that works a lot better.

Makes sense to me.

Good point. Maybe larger hit-box and lower damage on primitive shovel would help. From other side, there will be a tutorial eventually, so things like weapon hit-boxes will be explained.

I was kind of confused about what was happening in fights with primitive tools, and without a combat log this confusion only grew.

Was my opponent blocking my swings with his swings? There was some kind of funky animation going on. I don't think it was a hitbox issue, I could hit when I got my aim right. Maybe the primitive tools just need to be used more precisely?

They are certainly broken considering there is a skilltree assigned to them...

Anyway when I'm on next I'll try to find somewhere with metal weapons and some willing opponents.
