In the dev notes of the recent patch where the luck system was changed, it said that people need to make new jewellery because the old stuff would not work.

According to the stats on the buff and on the character sheet the old jewellery is working fine, the luck values have increased as would be expected. Some people have been reporting however that the luck based drops in game seem to happen way less with old jewellery than with new jewellery, even if they both have the same luck bonus on the tooltip.

Is this superstition, or are the old items bugged? Given that there is no visiable difference in game, if I have a piece of jewellery, how do I tell if it is old or new?

If the luck bonus looks fine with the old jewelry and there are no bugs there, then we are very happy with that.
