Building entire houses in a single placement

I watched one of the streaming of an alpha, and in that people put down entire houses as 'built'.

I really think your missing a huge oppurtunity by not having the building be walls, doorways, windows, roofs and floors.

The difference between plopping down a house, all looking the same, and all designed the same, and building a structure are huge.

With pieces that snap together, it should be possible to 'build a house' from many pieces, if it is worry over overhead of there being so many 'individual pieces' that have to have a location recorded, you could easily collate built pieces into one piece during some processing, then render them at one piece till some change is made, or you could link list 'pieces' off of some core piece.

Foundation one, attachment location 12 and 13, piece 7 facing outward.

The advantage, and customization, and feeling of building things really seems to require the ability to build from pieces, and the system to do that does not seem that complicated, simply by first having to 'connect foundation pieces'(and possibly raise or lower ground so they snap together) then having 'attach nodes' between different pieces of what can be added (and different textures for different types of items and different paints) really does not seem to be that difficult considering what it adds.

It also has what you will eventually need for expandability, since with the 'attachment nodes' comes the ability to put things inside of units on walls or floors also.

It also adds the ability of repair and attack, where someone could go through some 'weakest wall' or where a owner would have to fortify some areas more then others (lower walls)

If the clutter was a worry, some physics of needed strength to support levels of elevation, or cost to fortify larger amounts of outer walls, could easily keep bounds on structures. Since the maintance would take resources to counter deteroriation.


I mention this, because if you can adjust the land, you should be able to do more then plop down one of a few 'premade houses'.

But that's only the pre-visualisation of the buildings. Actually building stuff does work in stages.

I do agree... i'd rather build individual walls/doors/floors and make the house from scratch rather than have go with a pre-made model.

This is one of the major appeals of a sandbox game. I definitely think LIF is missing an opportunity by not allowing this flexibility.

On the other hand, i think the feature might be planned for the future. Not sure. But to implement this I think we would have to remove the option for pre-made houses entirely.

I think in later stages of development there will be an option to customize the houses. But im not sure^^

That small gain of immersion just isnt worth the amount of coding.

In the Database application (for testers only) I found buildings called "custom house <part>". They are already in the game, but maybe not implemented or enabled.

I would prefer a construction system similar to Wurm Online, like the terraforming is already.

They have already mentioned custom walls, doorways etc. If it effects PvP i don't want it (Due to server stability) but if it doesn't then it's already going to be a thing.

Custom homes like in Wurm Online would be ideal. Seeing how castle walls, and gates are placed in LiF makes me optimistic for the future. However, the prefab buildings are fine for now, and look nice enough. I would love more variety, though.

Question: How will building structures like houses or keeps work? Will we just build pre-designed buildings or can we (based off of skills) build the foundation, then the walls, then add stories for height and finally the roof?

Answer: Right now you can build pre-designed buildings and use pre-designed wall sections/towers/gatehouses to build your own castle perimeter. We plan to implement per wall house construction later.

So kind of bring in that feel of RUST's form of building is what you mean with "We plan to implement per wall house construction later" which would mean having the following being built each separately for adding on later: foundation, structure beams, support beams, staircases, windows, doors, rails, roof, archways, fences, and so forth. In order to make a custom built house?

Customized houses are planned for later stages of development. We had to cut that feature for no after our failed indiegogo campaign and hopefully will bring it back in next year.

Our original plan was to go Wurm/Xsyon/Rust way as per wall construction, but now we are shifting more to modular building, so resulting houses will be unique but not so squarish and boring.

Understandably I presume you'd most likely be able to go inside the modular towers and gatehouses. But what about regular house? Are those enterable?

Alright so I was correct, I figured you would have to wait till later to implement a more advanced style of home building till you got more funds to keep something like that in place and still run smoothly.
