The Scholas

Post by Ambaryerno » 24 Aug 2014, 03:24

I'm still on the fence about the game and may give it a try once it opens up, as it does have its intriguing points (IE focus on player-driven content). I'm also a roleplayer (and I mean role = CHARACTER, not your party function), and am given to understanding that guilds are the way to go.

Just a bit about me for background on this post, I'm a writer and student of the longsword, and for one of my current stories I'd recently been gathering some information on HOW the schools of defense were organized and run, and it gave me a thought:

I was curious if anyone out there was thinking of creating a guild based on the historical fencing guilds of the later Middle Ages (the London Masters of Defense, Brotherhood of St. Mark, or the Federfechter, etc.). I haven't had a chance to really go through the wikis and forums to get an idea of how "learning" swordsmanship and such will work (or if there will be no-kill PvP "sparring" possible) to know if the game mechanics would necessarily support such a thing gameplay wise (IE, more skilled PCs able to teach less-skilled PCs), but it could be an interesting opportunity nonetheless (especially if the guild vs. guild politics came into play if a new guild tried to intrude on another guild's territory.

There are wooden swords at least. Also, afaik there is a group mechanic in which its members don't deal damage to each other. Someone said that, at least.

The question then would be, does smacking around a guildmate with a wooden sword raise your skill level...

Sure, why shouldn't it? Training is training.

That s normaly the way you learn something.

Fighting against enemies right away wouldn´t be a good idea if you havn´t trained with a friend (or someone who won´t kill you after you make your first mistake) before to get some practice.

So it sounds like at least SOME mechanics are in place that would support something like the fencing guilds.

Setting up and training guild in main city would be awesome idea I think. you can charge newbies 10 bucks to get their sword fighting level up and if they cant do that they have to shape thousand rocks, bahaha

I think the best way to do it in order to simulate the historical dynamics would be to make it a Vassal Guild, in which case you are therefore sponsored in that particular region by the kingdom, similar to how the Marxbruder were given their charter to teach in the HRE.

And if the guild catches anyone else trying to do the same thing in their territory....
