Only steam?

Post by SaresITA89 » 29 Aug 2014, 15:45

Hello everyone,
I wanted to know if in the future Life Is Feudal can be bought only on steam, or we can have the lancher too on pc and therefore without steam.

My friend don't want steam

LiF:YO will be only on Steam. At least that is initial plan.
But LiF:MMO will be only available via our site. That is also our initial plan :)
But everything may change, so nothing is in stone yet.

Aw, really? I had hoped I could gather hours played and make all my friends know that I'm playing LiF...

Many other MMOs just add their game launcher to Steam.
So I guess it wouldn't be hard to do.

Even more so if we aren't going to be paying for the LiF:MMO game it self but rather each character.

Then again, not everything is set in stone yet. Plus I may still not be totally up to date with the planned business model.

I do not understand why LIF: MMO can not go on the steam, but thanks for reply

It can and will do at some point. It is just not that easy as you all think. We have a whole launcher that will do daily patches (all terraforming, objects and trees changes in the world). That will conflict with Steam CDS (content delivery system) and those conflicts should be resolved somehow.

Yet again, guys, stop comparing us with yet another MMO - terraforming/free building complicates things quite a lot.

Are you sure? That's exactly how PlanetSide2 operates... You start the launcher via Steam which then will download the upgrades.

Does Planteside have terraforming, free building and growing / chopped down trees? I know that it does not. And exactly that is a difference I am talking about.

What does it matter? Steam will start the launcher and you let the launcher do the rest...

 :%)
Ok, you've asked for it...

We have 2 streams of updates:
1. Classical updates. Updates to STATIC files of a client (textures, models, binaries, xmls). These will work well in Steam and that is how ALL OTHER games usually patch.

2. Our own update system of DYNAMICAL files (terrains, forests, objects). Since these patches can contain a lot of data they have their own super packed format. So only our client can properly unpack and apply them. Also only our client know what patches should be applied and what patches are already applied, because you had seen those changes and your client already received them during play time (remember when I've asked you to quit from the game to save all patches, when we were filming that promo movie?).

Steam can not and I doubt it will ever be able to patch OUR files with OUR patch-files. So our launcher have to deliver those proper patches on your PC and our client needs to apply them. Still it is better to leave #1 (classical) updates on Steam CDS.
That means we have to make more logic in all our patching system and launcher to determine steam and non steam launches.

I don't say that it is impossible, but if you ever programmed something bigger than "hello world" especially when you need to integrate different systems and one of them is not yours (Steam by Valve), you would understand that it can turn out into a lot of headache and spent developers time, which we can not afford currently.

Yeah, whatever... I have no idea about coding.
I was just under the impression that all Steam does is starting your game launcher via clicking on the LiF-Play symbol on Steam's interface all the while your launcher does all the magic in the background.

Yeah that is what I was thinking about too. (Just not PS2)

That just means that Steam only downloads (and updates) the launcher, which then installs the game somewhere else on your computer I guess.

But yeah, Steam most likely have rules for that that will have to be met and so too.

All I am saying is: LiF:MMO will most likely be on Steam... someday.
But lets make the game really happen first. ^^

Edit: Oh there was another page with the answers. Just ignore little me. ^^;

I would be interested to see the compression techniques yall use for sending and decoding the dynamic updates you were talking about. I studied digital signal processing and I am good at data compression/encoding. :friends:

You serious ?

So, just ask Bobik to send you the source code of all the game, it's the way easier...

It is almost standard TNL (Torque Network Library) with some tweaks and additions from us. You can join Torque3D on GitHub and learn it from the source.

hope that wont be the case only reason i didnt have the game now is a missing option of paysavecard payment which steam is offering. if the mmo wont be released on steam please add at least the payment option for people who not want to use credit cards or paypal int he internet

i am one of those people, mainly becuase ive been screwed over on alot of other mmos, and despite how legit this looks, past experience plays apart in me wanting the mmo having steam availability, as it is a trusted source.

in the case you wont do steam, atleast add a automated paypal option.
