you need bone glue, a wooden handle (right click knife), and a billet i think. saw this in an older thread.

unfortunatly i have yet to find out how to start crafting the mallet .. you can train construction by making these wooden fences but it's rather slow

you don't need a mallet to skill construktion.
a Primitive Hammer works too.. For a mallet you need bone glue and other think and a Carp. Toolkit.

To raise construction at first make some wooden fence, then new construction options will open up and you wont need mallet for any of them. I thought Mallet is a requirement first and it slowed my progress for a while

Skill cap? That was my error when I first hit the very same issue myself just 1 or 2 days ago.

I've recently read a tip here, that you could use a nice trick to avoid having your world full of leveling fences:
Just put only 9 branches into the crafting window and hit craft. You'll be rewarded skill for using up those 9 branches, but since the fence isn't done yet, you can still deconstruct it.
If you're a server admin or know him/her, that's not needed anymore, since they can delete objects now easily.

fences raise construction not carpenting

try refining logs (sawing out boards or billets or creating building logs to raise carpenting)
