I understand that the mining option only appears when you dig horizontal. What is the logic behind this?

I found copper, but it is on the tile beneath me. If I dig a tunnel downward, I get the copper, but not the mining skill. Now I have to do a lot of digging to get to the side of that block and get the mining option.

I do not get it. Will it be this way in the final version of the game?

anyway.
your digging/tunneling, in the square your digging is some copper.
to my understanding, your getting some copper cuz some of the square is copper, proberly under the dirt that your digging into, since you cant focuz on the copper to right click mine, you get it by digging.
as soon as you expose the copper vein, you can mine it and increase your mining skill.

Well, I understand that developera also visit this forum, so I was just asking the question how it is going to be.

I do not think you understand my question. My point is that if you find copper or iron or any other ore, you can only MINE that ore by digging horizontaly. If you dig from above you do not get the mining option and therefor no increase of mining skill.

I just state that that is not logical.

because if you MINE straight down, you'll create a hole, which you can fall into and get stuck. I'm sure the devs are saving themselves tons of time by prevent people from screwing themselves.

Just backtrack slightly and dig tunnel down. not that big of an issue.

It's alpha. Relax. Just put in a request for multi-directional digging AND mining.
