Gm abilities to claim/unclaim

Post by Ajaxx84 » 02 Oct 2014, 19:39

Myself as well as other Server admins have experienced this recent influx of trolls who log on a server run around for an hour claiming unclaimed buildings an such then just logout never to be seen from again. (or maybe stop by for an hour a few days later) Since these people are here simply to troll and not actually play on or contribute to a server, and obviously aren't playing as a legitimate bandit I would like to be able to fix buildings that they have claimed.

Is there a gm command to be able to force an unclaim (or a claim for that matter) on an already claimed building?

Or something that can be done via the SQL database?

Really annoying that they are abusing the lack of a proper claim system and the fact that these are small scale servers they don't have to stick around on.

Having perma claim is the solution to all problems.

That would result in creating lots of ghost towns, that later couldn't decay.

Very honestly, after being a member since alpha testing and so having some weeks of gameplay now, I must tell you that I start to question the building-claim system as a whole.

On one hand you'd say "defend against griefers and trolls by perma claim" - well I agree with you that this would create ghost towns and that would be wrong. Then there's the other side, "Why don't you expand the claiming time on, say, 2 weeks" - well sounds to good to be true. The problem with trolls would then remain and get worse. Trolls would come along, grief-claim random buildings that were unclaimed for whatever reason and so you'd be blocked out for 2 weeks even. Long story short: I start to question the whole claiming system at all and wonder if there couldn't be a better solution to satisfy both sides - to avoid ghost towns and yet give griefers and trolls very limited chances to achieve their goals. So far the only solution for those trolls I currently see on my private server is to GM-delete the grief-claimed building and GM-rebuild it for the owner to claim it again. But that, even if it works, can't be a longterm game mechanic solution.

What if a building had a cool-down until it could be claimed again and in which time some form of notification could be sent to the original claimant?
Also, what if there was a limit to how many claims one could make of a certain type of building?

So a clamed object wont decay at all? Well, isent the solution to that to put decay on them? All buildings must be maintaned anyway right? Or will claimed objects have no decay at all?

I think that would actually be an interesting approach.. there are only initial claims, so whoever first claims a building owns it "forever" (unless he manually unclaims it). However any kind of structure decays after a while and so it needs to be repaired by builders or it will fall apart and vanish at some point... I think that's pretty troll-secure and still not creating a ghost town, since unmaintained structures will fall apart and vanish after a while.

When destruction of buildings is implemented I imagine ghost towns would simply be destroyed by those who could use the space.

I'm not a proponent of perma claims since legitimate warfare and capturing of towns would become impossible. I do think 24 hours is too short, should be 3 days at least. Not everyone can log in consistently every day.

Well, they are not going to siege a hermit way out it the woods are they? hehe. Larger towns and nations, and they have special buildings that needs to be captured to lose thier land claim or something along those lines, that could also lead to loss of claim to buildings. The same way, that if you and a couple of dude have a little village, and a nation pops up, you automaticly lose you claim on the land and buildings.

So a perma claim on small villages and building decay would be the way to go, but we will se. Maybe if enough reporst come trough, things may get changed.

I propose a substantially simpler solution:

The person that initially starts construction of the building shall be given a paper deed in their inventory (or permanent rights to the building).

So long as that building is used or entered once every few days by the deed holder, it shall have a low decay rate. If it is neglected for more than a few days, it shall rapidly degenerate.

Trolls and such will not be able to hijack other people's buildings by claiming them.

Much easier, more effective.

As far as campfire griefing and such like that? Either:
- Create a server variable for the purpose of limiting the number of campfires or other simple structures that a character can create in an hour.
[or]
- Make campfires and other simple structures extremely easy to destroy.

So all the derailing aside. Anyone know if there is a GM command for taking claim of a structure?

nope, at least no command i am aware of. the only thing a GM can do at the moment is deleting the house / object and spawning it back again. but then sadly all items in it are gone too. a simple "/unclaim" command for GM's would make things so much easier imo.
