Honestly, what is there to do in this game? (MMO)

Post by Vem » 15 Oct 2014, 06:32

Other than crafting, farming, and guild wars, what is there to do in this game? Is there going to be any backstory or anything? I know guild wars are going to be a major part of the game, but if for example you're not in a guild, what would you do other than build a house and just sit around? I've been very interested in this game for a long time, but now that I think about it... what even is there to do? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Well it is an "MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME" so if youre playing alone, thats your fault being antisocial

Its like playing world of warcarft and when you hit lvl cap and say you've beaten the game and haven't done a single raid/rbg/arena

If you're looking for a chill community to play with pm me, bud.

Hello,

"what is there to do", i think that is a "dumb" question (no insult meant here).
The point is, it is an open Sandbox MMO.
You wont have Questlines, Dungeonraids or whatever there.

The game, will be exactly what the community makes of it!
Nothing more or less.

If your are looking for a game to get easy "achievements" to go around and talk like "mwahahah, i raided karazan with my 9 friends in like 2 hours!"
Sorry, your wrong here i think.

Like the good old Ultima Online, i guess it will be more about the Social Interactions and the ROLEPLAY in the long run, then just about achieving this or that ;)

Or a bit like minecraft... I've beater the Ender Dragon and stuff, its more about buildint the world i like ;) good looking buildings/towns etc...
So, i hope they will add the possibility to make custom buildings =)

I think guild warfare and roleplaying is pretty much all I would expect from a game like this.
I don't know what you would do as a solo player... What would you do all on your own irl? Life would be boring as well, right?

I think this is a very valid question.

The content of LIF will be driven by players.
* Guild Politics.
* Fighting over rare resources
* The inevitable forum wars leading to in game fighting

At the moment, there is nothing in LIF:YO for a single player to do, other than what you are stating. On a guild server there is more, as players strive to establish plans for the MMO release.

On the open servers there is certainly more to do in fighting other players, but it follows the same general theme that will be in the MMO, if you are playing by yourself than the game will likely become boring rather quickly.

That is one of the fundamental differences between a sandbox and a theme-park game. In a sandbox game - you make your own entertainment and storyline.

Hell successfully figuring out the combat system and perfecting it takes days of time alone. 8-)

I am in a guild, but if for example the guild isn't at war with anyone and doesn't need your help with building or farming, what can you do (with or without other people) just roaming around? Is there anything particularly interesting in the world, or any challenges other than large scale PvP?

Short answer is no.

The game is about building and maintaining a community. Items have durability too so they need to be replaced when broken.

To be able to function, a village or town needs to be resupplied. You can do this by harvesting ressources and turning them into finished products yourself, or by trading/stealing what you need.

To give you an idea, I can tell you what I usually do when I login on my server:
I'm the blacksmith of my community of six people. We are building a castle. We need flux and flax so I go around the different settlements and usually trade for Iron and Leather that we produce.
That's also the occasion to get to know your neighbors, we allied with another settlement to take down the leader of the main clan on the server and takeover the city.
That means we have to raise an army, craft armors and weapons, train the troops by actually fighting on the training grounds we installed, make battle plans and send spies to try to get some of their people on our side.

There is a lot of stuff happening in this game if you want it to, but you really have to talk to other players and play the social game. If you're not getting involved and you just farm your skills all day watching the green bar you will burn out and quit.

But even without a clan there are other ways to play LiF if you're really dedicated. We have a guy playing by himself who built a trading post / tavern in the center of the island. He also built a road leading from his spot to the main village. He's trading with pretty much everyone on the server so he always find someone to help him or trade what he needs.

There is certainly no need to resupply as it is right now.
There is almost no item drain on the economy - Items will rarely ever break.

Perhaps when the MMO releases they will try to make a functioning long-term economy where items are consumed enough to demand replacement.

The game is what you make of it. If all you can think of is guild wars and crafting, thats all it will be for you. What interests you in real life and take it back 1000 years and do that. Once an economic system is in place it will open up more, but as I remind everyone, we are only 5% there, the potential for the other 95% that ISN'T done is what keeps me interested.

Well stormsblade, they do decoy, our village had a huge consumption of tools since we were terraforming and logging alot.
i think it could actually be a little more decoy, but if not its not that bad.
i think of YO a bit like a little practice round for the mmo, since we have seen some advantages and weak points of most of the game mechanics and now have a fair idea of what to do in the mmo.
To be honest, YO just isnt the right way of doing it with those game mechanics, since you need a lot of space and even a shitload of players for it to become interresting.

To be sure, tools are the one exception right now!

I am not saying that decay and economics should be a first priority either. I certainly think its something they should look at closer to the MMO release.

That said, it would really be a shame if they failed to look at the economy at all, as it will be very important for sustained gameplay.

I do hope you are reporting those in Mantis or on these forums so they can be vetted and adjusted as needed.

Weird in the 2 weeks I been playing I went through 7 shovels and 8 Saws and 3 axes so rarely never breaks depends on how much you use them. If you work in the game your tools will break if you come on one hour a day your tools will last forever.

Quite. I've had 3 shovels break in one session. Then again, we were laying down the groundwork for a Large Keep and surrounding fortifications.
