I'm head of one of the groups (Blood Ravens).
There are indeed interesting pacts and alliances, ever shifting claims to land, some amount of trade (although it's really more for fun than it is for real profit, my group can acquire purest quality of everything essentially, but we trade because it's a good time and helps build good will in some ways).
The only thing I can say negative about this progression shown here is that my group's land claim has stayed the same size from when we were a chicken coop, a small plot of farming land and a handful of palisades to now when we have a large house, 6 warehouses, multiple 'shops', a keep, a windmill, about 350 squares of farmland actively being worked, about 650-700 total palisade units and arranged purchase of a big chunk of land from another group who was building too close to us.
That part's a bit disappointing - growing your settlement doesn't seem to increase the 'claimed' land. Only increasing it's population does. That, and land claims aren't quite equal for all similarly populated areas. This makes it more politically feasible to have several outpost type villages populated lightly than having a central, more heavily populated section.
Hashmire clearly seems to be doing some things that other admins aren't, adding that extra something to the server.
