Changing sounds in the game?

Post by Hogweed » 30 Oct 2014, 22:36

Hi,

I saw that the sound files for the game are all .ogg files on the PC, I was wondering if it was possible to replace some of the sounds with my own files.

I do this because some of the sounds are a bit hard on the ears (sand for example) and I have to turn my headphones way down because of the extreme repetition of the sounds from the many extremely repetitive chores in the game. After several weeks of playing, i am starting to feel like I have been going through something like a Chinese water torture.

The problem with turning the volume low - is that I wont be able to hear anyone trying to sneak up on me, which is a constant threat.

I was able to do that in minecraft when they had the same setup, before they started that other system I dont care for. But I know that sometimes the sounds can be locked, so i need to know if I can do that. You really should consider making that an option - as I know many people will feel the same way.

Its a simple process for me, and i cant see myself continuing to play very often when my ears are ringing, and I have to keep the sound up because of the threats.

Thanks for any help in this.

The devs have been pretty open with allowing for modifications, I'd say give it a try. The worst that can happen is it won't work, or it'll get patched over whenever there's a patch.

Yes, this would absolutely work. I'm already working on my own foley pack for the game that will be included in my server's mod. The currently used sounds are horrible!

Thanks for the replies! I did try to change one sound, and when I did replace the oog file, the game froze when i loaded it up.

I think the file size must be the same size, so now I have to re-size the file with a program, which saved it as an mp3, then convert it to an oog file.

I will update as soon as I get a trial going!

Most of the samples are 44.1khz mono 16-bit PCM files, so make sure that you are converting them to the appropriate format.

If any developers are reading this could you tell me if it is possible to use higher bitrate files with the settings you have declared in torque3d?

If $pref::SFX::bitrate is to be believed, the default setting is actually 32 bits.

That's the playback engine bitrate, it has nothing to do with the source material for it.

If the I game sounds are to loud, go into audio settings and lower the volume of the voice chat. That will lower the volume level of most of the sounds in game.
It does not matter who is the strongest fighter, just the last one standing.

Two of the sounds that need replacing IMO are the constant drum roll when injured (like an hour of it!) and the eating sound, which grosses me out every time I hear it (sounds like a horse!).

Welp, I wish I could pretend to know more about audio stuff. Is there a technical reason why fmod might not be able to handle bitrates it's configured to accept?
