Should I buy this game?

Post by Elkenzahr » 03 Dec 2014, 18:30

Hello everyone,

I've always been playing sandbox games comparable to this (EVE, wurm, haven&hearth) and I've been thinking about trying this one as well.

My only problem is that it is a whopping 30 euros for an alpha game, and I see some very mixed opinions when I look at the steam reviews.

I was hoping someone could properly enlighten me on the current state of the game and whether it is worth investing in it.

For a multiplayer sandbox style of game, it's already pretty great.

There are bugs here and there, but they're not anything more than you'd find in many already released games. Quite a bit of the features are either not implemented, or not fully implemented.

The character models aren't done yet, so your player might look kind of boring at the moment, it's a temporary model. With that, the combat system isn't really done fully yet, because well, why perfect the combat using a temporary model.

But what's already in the game you can easily spend 200+ hours enjoying if you like sandbox styles of Simulation/Strategy games.

Farm fields, raise chickens/hares and now cattle/sheep/pigs. Build housing and place furniture in it. Build walls around your "home" to fortify it and make it harder for others to get at you and your stuff. Find others to play with and try to play by a "live and let live" mindset. Or decide to play the villain and kill anyone and everyone you want, and take their stuff by force.

This is not an MMO though, don't think that. It's a multiplayer currently. How I explain it to other strategy gamers is thus:

In Civilization, you have Settlers and Workers that you send out to build improvements and new cities. The players are these units in LIF. You build roads, walls, flatten terrain, plant and chop down forests and slowly you migrate from being a "camp" type area, to a Farm if you're by yourself, or a Village if playing with others. And then you just keep on going to improve your area, and on some of the more populated servers, will connect different areas by roads.

There aren't any Guild/Order/Realm/Kingdom features in the game yet, but that doesn't really stop folks.

this is an alpha, and you're going to feel it. especially multiplayer cooperation (share houses or crates) isnt in yet. if you're looking for something to experiment with, you can have a really good time with a couple friends on a private server.
if you opt to play on a public server, be prepared for the possibility of someone stealing your stuff or griefing you in some other way.

all in all i'd recommend waiting until january, by then the devs will hopefully get a claim system up and running.

I've yet to find an MMO or multiplayer game similar to this where this wasn't the case. There's always going to be griefers, exploiters, and others I generally refer to as asshats.

If you're incapable of dealing with them now on a 64 man server, you'll have a real hard time in the MMO, claiming system or not, when there's thousands.

Don't get too attached to your Pixels, and you won't have to worry about /ragequitting.

Welp, I decided to give it a go anyway. Loading everything up I've had no problems so far, and fortunately there seem to be no frame rate or graphic related problems. Just going to read up some more on guides before continuing.

sure, but there are different degrees. usually, if you're playing smart, you can avoid catastrophic losses. you cant in this game (yet). its really all based on goodwill, which works for groups of friends or small, closed communities. all i know is im going to stay on my own server until claiming is in and walls work like they're supposed to^^

Eh, protecting you stuff is a bit better now. The house exploits were fixed with the "you can't place item there" change, fixing being able to place a log down on a cell you are standing in, which helps prevent folks from glitching through house walls.

Warehouses are mostly secure now as well, except during the point of time you are unclaiming them to reclaim (to reset the timer), but you shouldn't be doing that with others around anyhow if it's your personal storage.

With the new 3k/5k/15k limits on the warehouses now, should be one of the first things you build as a new player.
