Please help with a few answers

Post by BogdanEpureanu » 14 Dec 2014, 12:30

Hello fellow Knights and Ladies,

I am just about to embark in a new adventure in this medieval world, and I have a few questions, which I hope you will be so nice to answer - something for which I thank you in advance!

1. I intend to play this game solo (yeah, I know, some of you already hate me for that - but please respect my wish since that is what suits me). Is there any sense to rent a server (so it is always live), keep a server on my computer but open always (or at least always when computer is on) even if I am not online or it is OK to just start the server in the moment I log in and close it in the moment I log out. I mean, the last option would obviously be preferable, but I am afraid that maybe some things (like trees growing up or something) requires the server to keep running in background or I will soon run out of trees and stuff. :)

1.1. If rented server is needed, can you please recommend the cheapest option out there (considering that I basically only need one slot and probably no mods :P).

2. In order to be able to raise all skills by myself, I have to set the skill limit to 3.000 points, right? What about stats points - those can be raised too or they are fixed?

2.1. If fixed, can you recommend (or point me to a proper guide) of a good "solo build"?

3. Dunno the situation for rented servers, but on self hosted servers maximum animals per map is 100. Is that the proper number to set if you want at least a semi actively world or less than that is enough? If less is enough, then how less? :)

4. I am looking for a game to play for years, not "finish" in a couple of days, weeks or months. What server settings you suggest for this to make it long, but still reasonable difficult - would "1" (same as MMO) setting be ok? too high? too low? What would you recommend? Pretty much looking for something as difficult / grindy / long as WURM style (if you are familiar with it). What about the other servers like terraforming speed, duration for farming / fires / etc?

5. Can you please recommend (or point me to a proper guide) of good options for starting skills / stats / race?

6. Can you please recommend (or point me to a proper guide) how to get started in this world (former WURM player, so I don't really need to be babysited - just the basic hints on what to start with).

7. Anything else I should know / read / etc.

Once again, thank you in advance!

For slow solo play, skill/stat multiplier of 1 is probably going to be what you want.

You won't need to rent a server, just run one on your own pc (I'd recommend the standalone server as opposed to the "create a world" server)

You'll want/need to restart the server every few days because of memory leaks and other issues, but I wouldn't recommend just starting it when you want to play. With the most recent updates, it actually takes an incredibly long time to start up the server, in the neighborhood of 15-45 minutes.

Stat points are hard capped at 150, and yes 3000 skill points is enough to max everything. You might want to set it down just a little in case you need to drop a skill to move stats around, but that's up to you. I keep mine at 2000.

I also prefer the longer crafting ticks, and set the fire time at 300 (5 minute ticks) -- Yes, it takes a bit of time to actually melt anything, but you aren't really tied to the furnace the whole time either. Roughly 1 hour real time to heat ore to melting temperature, with one or two uses of the bellows in the middle.

Farming duration I set to 2.8, so my crops are ready at about 22.5 hours, and don't decay until about 28 hours. It seemed like a happy middle ground for me, and easier to schedule than a 3/24hr timeframe, where you're spending another hour preparing and replanting, and that throws your harvest time off for daily harvests.

I play solo, keeping skills progression to one and the cap at 300, so I can transfer a character to the MMO when it is ready should I choose. I play six characters, which is about what you needs for a village, one in each skill line and a hunter. It takes a little longer to build things and the only combat is against wolves, but otherwise the game plays very well solo. The only drawback is having to exit and restart each time you want to change character.

No hate for soloplayer....
However you do it, it will be a lot easier if you play on one character and set the skill cap to 3000.

There is no way to switch between characters without a full restart of the game (loading into the world takes a lot of time) and there is no benefit to playing multiple characters unless you want the feel for what it will be like in the MMO (600 skill cap.)

There will be no "character transfers", however.
