Am personally expecting a lot of these issues now.
It looks as though for about 2 hours today, they released a Hotfix.
However, something was wrong with that hotfix, so they pulled it.
During that 2 hours however, many servers got updated, as well as Steam Clients. Several "official" styles of servers have done an Update Rollback, and the Hotfix that they released is no longer able to be downloaded. For me, about 3 hours today I was unable to play due to the "Invalid Version" errors. Now since the server I play on most often has rolled back to 0.7.2.1 (my client version), I'm able to play on it again.
So, how to fix. If you are a server admin, roll it back if at all possible, or re-install the game files for the server completely. If you are a player using steam, right click it in your library, then Properties>Local Files>Validate Game Cache. If this does not work, you'll have to use the "Delete Local Content" files in that same window, and do a fresh install.
Good luck, this is gonna be a bit of a headache.
Edited to Add: Also, I would turn off auto updates via Steam for a while, the "only update this game when I launch it" option in the Updates Tab of Properties will allow you to manually choose when to update it.
