Issues with storage and questions

So every survival game out there has some means of beginner's storage. Minecraft has the small chest, for example, which can be easily upgraded to a bigger one. I'm not saying we need huge amounts of space in the beginning, but we need something craftable with wood and plant fibers or something. I know it's not realistic but it's a video game, and me having to drop my stuff on the ground all the time sucks, and I hate it. I want to be able to store things.

Why can't I just store everything in my immensely large hut? It just doesn't make sense to not have a storage solution for early in the game when we have to gather a bunch of stuff?

If I'm missing out on something, please tell me because this is driving me nuts and is immensely ruining my gameplay experience, 100%. Every time I try to play I just realize my inventory is full and I have nowhere to put my stuff so it doesn't despawn or whatever.

You can easily build a furnace to store stuff in at the beginning stages of game.
Server that I play on offers starter kits upon registration which includes a trade cart, with some goodies ofcourse.

A Furnace that holds 100 items. EDIT: 100 STONES worth of items.

I'm gonna have to spam a lot of furnaces. And can't other people open my furnace?

I meant for you to store stuff in there until you can build more appropriate containers. It doesn't take all that long to get a barrel or crate. Which you can then bury or hide from prying eyes, until you can build a house or warehouse.

This isn't my point, I want something that will store my items and not let people get it out of it. Do furnaces and other containers do this?

Also burying would be a nice idea, (not sure about slow rate servers though) how do I go about that?

Edit: Oh my god I am fed up with this game. 10 wood billets= a full furnace.

What. Why. THESE LITTLE PIECES OF WOOD TAKE UP 100 SPACES?

Jesus christ the devs... what the heck dude. I can't even.

OH YEAH and on top of that the anvil I had to drop yesterday despawned. Like drop on the ground. In a sack.

Seriously what the heck dude. This game. THIS GAME

You're simply getting frustrated about things you don't undersrand.
Yes people can take stuff from furnaces, but do they always? No, not all expect to look through furnaces to find caches.
Wooden billets aren't meant to fuel the smelters (although they can) - charcoal is.
And the decay system that was applied to animal corpses, grave stones, and loot bags came out a while ago. It's the whole reason people have to build containers to store stuff in. The bags decay after 2 server days.
You want a storage that is inaccessible to other players? You're going to have to work for it. That's what half this game is about.

The game is very group based, especially on servers that stick to (or close to) the MMO's skill point limits. One person shouldn't be able to build a home, a warehouse to store their goods, a farm to feed their livestock and themselves, defensive fortifications, and workshops to ply their trade(s) in.

If that's what you're after, IDK what to tell you, other than you're unlikely to find that in LiF. Life in these times was very difficult, survival/subsistance is hard work, and even if you did everything right, your odds of dying horribly were still pretty high.

I personally like the harsher aspects, that was part of what drew me to the game. Days upon days of work, only to get caught in the woods and eaten by a bear? Awesome. I love that kind of thing, and IMO, it's one of the things that set LiF apart from more mainstream titles, the sense that danger could be lurking behind every tree. Because life is feudal. :evil:

I'm also new, only been playing a few days. But have found ways around having to store things.

You mentioned needing to store Billets in your furnace. If you trying to make Ingots get your Ore 1st, 80 (will make 4 Ingots) and put that in the furnace, then cut down a tree and get 10 Billets. Put 2 Billets in at a time while melting the 80 Ore.

You said you dropped an Anvil, i'm guessing you wanted to build a Forge and Anvil but couldn't figure out how to store all the mats for it since it's 600+ stone weight in Mats.

You don't need to carry or store it all, simply start construction of your Forge and Anvil, then can add the Mats to it and partially construct it, just keep farming what you can carry then adding to the Forge construction as you go.

Same goes for any type of large construction, just start construction on it and add the mats to it as you get them. No need to store the mats anywhere.

The poster makes an excellent point, it is very difficult to acquire the needed items and store them safely when you start out. The addition of an easily craftable small case, that is made from branches would ease the situation. Then the new player could bury it with a shovel load or three.

I have read all responses and thank you guys for the replies. In my SP world I have since made 7 furnaces to store stuff in just in case.

However it would be far too obvious to do this on a multi player server, so I guess I have that to figure out. I think my issue mostly is that I don't want to work bit by bit to level, I want to gather all the materials at once and BLAM, level 30 or 60 or 90, etc. However that, after playing SP for a few days even with boosted levels, is not how this game runs and I see that now.

I need to make use of leveling (extremely) slowly and when I am able to build something, store the materials in it and work it up slowly instead of trying to do it all in one big heap like I mentioned also.

Upon looking up how to make charcoal that does look extremely more decent to use than billets which would save me a lot of time.

Now if I just didn't have to spam fences for construction, we'd be in business.

Again, appreciate the replies. I've learned a lot over the past few days on my own and now reading these replies, and I deeply appreciate it. Maybe this game wasn't a waste of money after all... lol.

You don't get the materials back though so I'd rather just build a giant square of fences or something. It'll come in handy for something I'm sure.

The best way to level Construction is to build kilns over and over... go near a clay pit... put down a kiln... just put the clay in it.. beat the clay in... deconstruct it ... repeat 150 times

Better quality food will make your food multiplier go up and will make your skilling up process a lot smoother.
Single player for LiF even with 3000 skillpoints is a pain. Working as team brings the true results and doesn't discourage from bigger tasks.

It is acutally quite simple to create a warehouse, which is under the Masonry skill. Warehouses are the only real safe storage method, as houses can still be glitched into, and chests can, as you said, be opened.

A small warehouse is not hard to make, and if you need one fast, the best thing to do is trade for the harder mats it requires.

The mortar, which is the only difficult thing to retrieve for the warehouse, is made using flux and a bloomery. 4 thin leather hides are required for a bloomery, which requires a whole process to get to make those. So, your best bet is to find a larger group, trade 4 flux to use their bloomery, and turn another 4 flux in the mortar required.

The small warehouse has 3000 secure storage slots, plenty for 2-3 players early on as secure storage. You can also put additional chests and utilties in the warehouse which is more safe then in the open, and you can suround it with pallisade walls to cover the windows.
