Hello there, i really could use some advice. My family (3 persons) want to have our own island and server. we see so many servers already on the list, but you never see persons online. So instead of using an external server and pay a monthly fee (pretty expensive) we wonder if there are free external servers. Orrrrrrr how does everybody makes a server and pay for it and never be online. It cannot be all private home computers converted into a local servers. So whats the best to do? Is there a possibility to have a dedicated server for free? And if so...how do we do this?
I dont mind paying but for sure if there is another way i would be happy to hear ideas or options. We tried to create a world just for us, but it did not work and got stuck.

Some guilds gather donations and run servers for members, but as members interests switch to other games, the server could stick around until the end of the lease term.. (30,90,180days) depending on how much the guild spent. Or they could be using one of their own dedicated boxes and just have it running in addition to other servers and not care about the system resources.

If you start your own world through game menu other members of your family can join your server by command. Write it to console.
joinToRemoteServer("IP:PORT","PASSWORD")
or without password
joinToRemoteServer("IP:PORT")

If you are creating a server on your own PC, it will be your external IP that is actually being leased to your router. In order to discover that IP, go to whatismyip.com. After that you may need to open a set of ports on your router, the same ports that your server is using (i.e. 28000).

Opening ports is a different process, depending on your router's manufacturer and firmware. Most of the time, you will log into your router via web browser, aimed to your computer's deafult gateway address (usually 192.168.1.1), but that address can be different depending on router manufacturer. To find your gateway address on windows machines, simply open a command prompt (run: "cmd") and type "ipconfig" then press enter. This will display your computer's local IP address, along with the gateway address and other addresses which you won't need.

It should works. Server will run only when you start it.
