I must say, I'm quite disapointed there won't be proper parrying.. I won't play two handed in that case, because I want to survive more than 30 seconds in battle, and I don't want people to just slash slash slash slash like retards without me being able to stop them even tho it would be easy in real life. Well, I know, gotta think about the.. 5 % ? Community of too shit shitty ping for that kind of system..

Sorry If I seem like a crybaby, but hey, I want to play this game mainly for the combat and the battles. If combat system is just about who hits the fastest / the first, it's not gonna work. And even if you reduce damage dealt and make combos actually important, It won't matter because if you have the same equipment as the guy you are facing, but less health, you have NO WAY to win, simply because he only has so slash you and he's assured to win.

But maybe I'm just too used to killing people because of superior skill, and I'm the only one thinking that. That's why I created this poll, to see if this is true, or wrong.

No, I'm 100% with you on this.

But in the end we might just not be the target group as it's more about the building/survival aspect.
It's really hard to say how combat will turn out eventually.

I think the devs are aware of our skeptisism and we just have to wait how it'll be solved...

We are aware about your skeptisism indeed ;) While making such ambitious project as an indie team without huge gamedev experience we had met A LOT of skeptisism and got kinda used to it.

I'm quite sure that once we gonna have a fully implemented, balanced and polished combat system, you will like it, though not as much as the one you got used to by playing it for years straight. But I'm sure, that with an open mind you will understand our system and will accept it at some degree ;) :)

I'm fully on your side there, Hoshiqua. If I can't win a fight by being better than my enemy, I won't bother with this. I stopped playing this game after ~100 gameplay hours after the first few people on the server had weapons and raids started happening. Not being able to get out of a fight without being wounded is simply annoying

Well, I'll be patient Bobik, but really, think twice before preventing us from parrying. Combat system is very good, gives a way to quickly kill someone or badly wound him, but PLEASE, PLEASE make a parrying system like in Warband, when you don't have a shield. And also, make one shoting people possible at an extent (couched lance in a naked head should be instant kill, same as arrow or bolt in naked head).

But you should give a better description of your ideas Bobik.. personally, my main question is, how can you survive more than 30 seconds in battle when you don't have a shield to block incoming damage ? As you described it, people will be able to slash you all the time until you die.

Last I checked it was pretty close to M&B minus the parrying thing you mentioned.

My memories of mount and blade are people spinning in circles over and over swinging swords.

I stick to single player these days.

Doesn't sound like M&B... M&B is more like "keep feignting as fast as you can until the other one blinks for a milisecond and then strike"

Takes a lot of skill to faint that much, and it's easy to counter. Just strike the guy. There are some pros that do it and are able to actually hit if you try to strike back, but most of the players that do it just mindlessly press left click + right click, and when you strike back, they usually do not let their blow go fast enough.

That's not my experience... Usually, people who feint a lot do have very fast reactions and parry your attack in most cases.

I do feint reasonable well, but I'll be carrying a shield if possible so hitting me while I'm feinting is not as easy.

I know a lot of us came here because the combat system was being toted as something similar to Mount and Blade. I hope you guys stay as close to that formula as possible, since it is clearly something quite a few people want and it has been proven to work as a combat mechanic.

just..imagine. lif with this kind of combat system (imho is better than M&B). this polish team is developing the game by taking into account medieval martial artists advices. and its look frikkin realistic and amazing. open question for devs: is it possible, with the engine you have, to work on the combat system in order to make it as close as possible to that 1?

I don't think so.. lag would screw up that kind of system, and I still have to see how you can fight multiple foes at once.

Well, there are ways to fight multiple foes at once, to an extent. I was just talking about how they will handle that.. a game where you just die if more than 1 guy fights you is dumb, especially if you got weapon and armor advantage (think a buckler / warhammer guy versus 2 spearmen in cloth..)

I don't understand why you want M&B's combat system, in Life is Feudal.

I will explain, why i don't understand you, and why i'm not agree on this point.

First one, Life is Feudal, have almost the same combat system as M&B.

And Number two, Life is Feudal IS Life is Feudal.
Why do you want Life is Feudal to be an another game ? Why don't you want to life is feudal to has his own system ?


The LiF combat system is not the greatest, but not the worse.

It's not difficult to understand how PvP in Life is Feudal work.

Well, I do not want LiF to be M&B. Those are different games in their whole, but the combat, as far as I know, aim to be the same .. skill based, pretty realistic combat system. And the problem now with LiF's combat, in melee, is that it is NOT skill based. You can not parry, the shields break in a few hits, so the fights have turned to who can hit the first, and if the weapons are not 1 shot kill like most weapons, then the combat is just "Spam your wep, when out of stamina run away in peaceful mode, stop moving to recover, go back".

That is why. I have always LOVED M&B's combat system, it is basically what would make this game a LOT better, and it is a system that has proven to work, and favor the skilled players.

Because it's inferior to M&B by a mile.

Combat animations feel weird and floaty. There is no direct response to landing a strike or taking a hit. It encourages spamming.

Just compare pvp footage of both games...

M&B: people stand face to face, strafing around, feinting, blocking. It really feels like dueling somebody.

LiF: people hold down left mouse button, run towards an enemy, release it, then they're running off and land another lucky strike later.
I don't get how anybody has fun with this kind of combat system. It's really just about having the bigger weapon and armor and spamming attacks/running after people

I agree that parry should be buffed up heavily. If you counter the strike it doesn't really make sense to take damage imo.

Only in situations where numbers are even. Kinda the point, make a system work well when the number of attackers equals the number of defenders. Been in many no-respawn battles where as soon as there was a 3 to 4 player advantage, the other side crumbled quickly.

I would prefer to see a battle and combat system that favored the defenders over the attackers. The whole "home field advantage" deal.

I don't care about 1 v 1's, or even the 1 v 5 or 2 v 2 or 3 v 3's. I care about the 50 v 50s. The 100 v 100s. And if the game somehow supports it, 500 v 500s. I've yet to actually play a game where having 1000 players in/on the same server cluster actually allowed both sides to play effectively. But I like to stay optimistic, and have hopes to see it.

Support team play, strategy, and building good defenses. Hell, many battles in the Feudal era had roughly 100 defenders fending off thousands of attackers, and prevailing. Hell even in modern warfare that is the case. It's a lot easier to defend a Fort or Castle than attack it. I'd prefer having it that way in the game too. Quit worrying so much about the solopwnmobile combat, it's not meant to be a single player game.

Skill based is also the thing to have for that kind of stuff ;) Why ? Because skill based approach allow players to use fortifications much better, unless the game has some static, unrealistic advantage added for the defenders. But if it is not skill based, then it is purely number based, and it doesn't really benefit the defenders. On Mount & blade, I've seen plenty of tight groups of very skilled and organised players fending off a LOT more players. Hell, just yesterday, we fended off a siege on Persistent World mod where there was 70 players against us, about 20, with a pike and shieldwall formation. And it worked, because Mount & blade's combat system takes player SKILL in (and when I talk about skill, I don't only talk about individual combat proficiency of each players, I talk also about the skill of the leader at tactics, organisation..).

Sure, me and a buddy usually take on a couple of enemies at once. One of us goes near them and keeps them busy while the other one stays back and every once in a while pokes the other guys with a long spear.

Playing against less experienced players can really play out in your favor when there's 3 against 1. You can trick them pretty easily by pretending to fight against one and then quickly turn against the others. They usually feel very safe and that's your advantage.
