Survival mechanics? are they possible in LIF?

Post by Imperius » 21 Dec 2012, 14:26

So after playing some Metal Gear solid 3 today it got me thinking about survival mechanics in games.. idunno if this would be possible with LIFS engine or if it would just consume way to much time on the programmers part but here are some cool survival mechanics stuff.. This is something that i really love seeing in games.

So if your character had 3 more bars like health and stamina for example.

Heat- It could affect Stamina,Thirst, Movement speed. and if it gets to out of hand you could even die.. For example your walking around in the snowy mountains to long first you start to lose stamina then you start moving slower and if it got so bad you would have to cut open your horse and sleep inside of it like a Jedi.. or make a camp fire..

Hunger- This could maybe help keep you warm in some cases, It would also determine how fast you regenerate stamina..maybe some foods like salty beef jerky would bring your thirst down.

Thirst- Would be similar to hunger.. you get to low and you start to lose stamina and soon die once its been at 0 for to long..

So i did not go into to much detail on this but you get the idea.
I just stayed up all night and decided to drink some coffee...so i am sorry for the poor editing on this no sleep then caffeine tends to make me feel a bit drunk . :L

After playing Day-Z for a few months, I reckon that survival mechanics sound pretty cool. Driving people to "Dare to shoot the kings deer..."

Survival mechanics? are they possible in LIF?

I love survival mechanics myself, but with any game there must be a balance between realism and fun.
And with a sandbox game where the players already control so much and it takes so much thought and time to complete certain things, adding in too much survival mechanics could prove negative on the game.

That being said I would enjoy any and all mechanics! Make the game hard and scare away the weak hearted! :D

Find the proper balance of course.

Meh, I posted, and my browser screwed with cookies, so I have to post again ;(

Hunger and thirst is implemented (it will be, when the game is ready). Heat is kinda dangerous idea. It can work well, or completely destroy balance. People will want to settle in balanced-temperature regions instead of frozenscorched wastelands. Grassy places will be overcrowded, while weaker players will leave, because they won't be able to start game on harder terrain.

Other survival stuff implemented in-game:
- Wounds will make players move and work slower (broken leg for example), while untreated wounds will et worse. (can't underestimate even light bruises)
- Day/Night cycle - night time is good for stealth attacks on enemies, but it's more dangerous to wander in woods alone in night time (wolves comes in packs, you know)
- Alchemy - potions and consumables help you survive in hard situations (medicines, poisons, etc.)

Actually I like the statement you made about Heat. I love that harsh areas would actually be harsh and keep players from wanting to live there. Think of the defensive benefits of taking the time to move deep into a frozen area and make a living?

As long as the map has a big enough area of "balanced-temperature" then it shouldn't be much of a hindrance to the playerbase as a whole.

But your concerns still hold merit.

Im sure some will find these areas quite cozy.. :D i remember on MO running through the mountains on my miner to get away from rpkers.. alot of the time they would fall off and die because they did not know where to step, I really hope the make a place like Ghoul Khor in LIF that place was alot of fun.

Im MO they plan on having a heat system eventually. It would affect the cloths you wear was the idea. Hot = wear light armour. Cold = wear warm armour (furs etc). This would lead to different regional armour types and needing different types of armour to be effective in different climates, which would be interesting.

The reference to Gaul Kor is very appropraite here. As would a reference to the Jungle in MO. The jungle is made very hostile by semi darkness in the day and pitch black at night with many rivers and agressive strong mobs. The Mountains and Jungle should only be easy to live in for those that put in the effort to learn their patterns and the enironment.
