Why should membership of a guild not be seen only in the tabard? It is an item easy to make and it will give a deeper dimension of the roleplay.

Make sure that guild membership is only visible if you are equipped with a tabard, which would give the tabard a real benefit rather than just an aesthetic element. And that would allow acting on behalf of "..." or on the contrary to act without undermining the guild.
