The game of thrones/giant kingdom

Post by Proximo » 23 Feb 2014, 10:43

This is just personal thoughts and not related to ATS in anyway.

Has anyone put much thought into forming an actual Kingdom. Meaning a large amount of guilds and players. Hyperion in Darkfall I think could muster the most amount of players at 1 time at it's peak.

Obviously we haven't gotten ingame yet but there are no large scale schemes popping up yet. It seems like it's going to be everyone building up first and then resorting to minor politics between neighbors. Which could still be fun overall. I still stand by the prediction of this game getting a surge of population and land/resources being taken up quickly and large kingdoms being formed.

Tell you the truth I like the fact that horses/archery/ships won't be in at the beginning because it adds to the ingame development over time.

For example we all start as half naked settlers and build cabins and huts. We come together and build a palisade and form a town. We make axes and crude swords and maybe start raiding or doing petty wars. Overtime military tech develops like siege engines and stone castles. Towns turn to cities and cities come together to make kingdoms.

It's all going to add to the life of this game :D .

My prediction:

Everyone starts with nothing and 100s of minor realms pop up across the map. Eventually as they tech up and start running out of resources they will start conquering other lands, or lose theirs. Which will lead to the winner allowing the loser to kneel and become his vassal and create a kingdom. Or just plunder and keep the land.

I don't think that will be very common because wars themselves cost resources. If your running out of resources and you go to war you lose more resources unless your acing the enemy but let's be realistic and say both sides suffer losses.

I don't think wars will be fought to annihilate realms very often but more to basically gain ownership of a certain area with resources on it.

As you said losers of a war may kneel to a conqueror and become there vassal instead of being wiped out. Also realms may join a kingdom because of trading or before a war is started if they know they would lose. If your rich enough you could basically bribe realms to join you or atleast hire mercenaries to fight your wars.

The idea is all very intriguing.

Unless you wish to go to a new area, and spend a portion of the raw resources there building a city/defense. Your other option is to siege a city who still has raw resources left. The already harvested resources they have are just a bonus. You mainly want the city/defenses.

There will definitely be alliances that form into kingdoms, but from my experience everyone wants to be the leader. So if you have the military power, most will try to take by force then share power.

From my experience everyone wants freedom and very few people actually step up to lead. Good leaders aren't tyrants and are known to draw people in with there charisma. In my humble opinion.

For some reason when I read over the Kingdom system and political scheme of this game I keep thinking of EVE Nullsec politics.

I think it will start with 100's of small country claims and then over time claims with either similar game styles or geographical location will form together in one way shape or form into kingdoms. I see a lot of Trade agreements and NAP's and other fun agreements in place.

And eventually someone is always power hungry and tries to expand their influence either for more land or just resources and then the wars start. And whenever you get a big kingdom that does that people seem to band together to try and topple them

Well, there will likely be natural progression towards larger kingdoms and counter kingdoms. Rivalry will begin to cause people to rally to various sides. Eventually the map will have a number of power blocks (hopefully more than a handful for dynamic politics.) In addition things will get more active politically if/when some of the larger established clans pop their heads into the game.

There are some core Hyperion decision makers that are lurking around the forums and we've held some discussions among our group about LiF. It is the perfect game for Hyperion, but obviously things will be done differently.

For SSR and the majority of former Hyperion guilds we are looking at a longterm strategy with a more organic build up over time rather than a rush at launch.

IMO what's going to eventually end up happening is the formation of maybe 10 really big kingdoms. With lots of smaller realms and guilds. And soon the main thing to do for new players as soon as they get into the game is pick a kingdom to serve. Freedom won't remain a factor for long. It's not necessarily a bad thing because that's just how society is. But 3 years down the line after the release I think it's going to be a state of perpetual warfare between major kingdoms.

That's exactly how I want it. And that's why I want to join/form a guild in the early stages so hopefully my kingdom can make it to the top.

I don't know if this will happen but it would be pretty cool for an ambitious king(player) to actually try and rule LIF by becoming Emperor of the entire map.

He can try, but the amount of viking or raider guilds that's forming up already appears to make it an unrealistic endeavor.

I find the political stuff about such a game pretty interesting as well.
