Winter sucks add a balance

Post by FortKnight » 05 Jan 2018, 13:55

Winter sucks as it should I am not about to say it should be removed but i know a lot of people just log off for the winter and that's not good for the game. In the winter everything grows slowly which is a realistic feature. I purpose that during the winter crafting times are decreased. So in the winter things grow slow craft goes fast, in the summer crafting slows down and growing speeds up. It adds some balance that might keep people playing year round.

Actually things dont grow slowly in winter.

Trees grow normally.
Crops DONT grow if there is snow.
Winter isnt the same in every region in game. The further south you are the shorter winter is. Like down in sleepers forge winter just started a few days ago. But up in the Western Domain it started like 3 weeks ago. And WAY up north in the Icy Hermits winter started like 4 weeks ago.

So it is balanced. Dont like winter, move south.

Considering this is a medieval survival/simulation game, it is balanced. Winter is different in every region, and harder in some regions then it is in others.

Winter will be harder in northern regions then the southern regions. Just like real life, hence the "Simulation" part of this game.

If that's the case then I need to file a bug report. I planted a load of hazel... must be almost 2 r/l weeks ago, they haven't grown at all. I haven't tested with any other type of tree (because after seeing the hazel not growing I assumed it would be a waste of time). Can anybody else confirm?

What has the weather been like?

Hazels, Oaks, Junipers are all slow growing trees.

Trees only get a growth spurt during the transition from rain/snow to cloudy to clear skies. If it is sunny a lot they wont grow as fast, if it is cloudy a lot they wont grow either. If it transitions from cloudy to sunny a lot they will grow pretty quick, if it transitions from rain/snow to sunny a lot they will grow REAL fast.

I think a Hazel nut tree takes about 2.5 real life weeks to grow to major, if not 3. I know I planted some before winter in game they just hit major on monday.

My Junipers only hit Medium about 4 days ago. Yet I have had almost 2 cycles of Birch and Spruce, and 2 of Pine and Oak.

We are in temperate zone (servers #22 - #28) and weather has been what I guess is "normal" winter weather. I expected slow growth, but these are clearly not growing at all.

That region isnt really great for tree growth even in the summer months. Most trees grow well up north.

Same region as myself, winter ends for this region around March/April in game, so about 2 more weeks maybe 3.

Our guild just started a little over a month ago so winter has sucked due to us not having enough time to get our claim together, get farms going, and get a return before winter. I like how the seasons are working as is. I just wish we would have had more time to prepare for winter since our barns, tailors, and other crafts require many items that cannot be grown in the winter. That being said we haven't been crippled by winter. You fish and hunt. You trade for items you don't have. That's the best part of the game.

Exactly.

I know my guild we learned quickly this winter, that our original stockpiles of hay ended up being pretty short of what we actually needed. So we are making new plans based on our increased numbers of members vs CBT. So next winter we wont have any issues. Our farmers and our "land o'crat" has been working on getting our new farm fields ready for planting.

I myself have been taking note on my daily expenditure verses my intake of food, hey, and wood. I have new numbers to work with for the summer and next winter.

Hi !

What would be great is a sort of clock so you know in what season you're in.
I mean they had clocks back in the day so they knew winter was coming.
Maybe a command like /season returning current season in the server and remaining time in this season.

Just a thought.

Actually they did not have clocks in the 11th century.

They had candle clocks which were candles marked so you could see how many hours had gone by while they were lit. Or Oil Lamp clocks which worked the same way. And then there was the hourglass... that is about it. No clocks like you would know them. At least not in Europe.

As for the season, you can kind of look around and see what season it is by the month, and the leaves on the trees.

If it is a hard wood tree, birch, oak or maple. (technically aspen too but not in game) You can see if it has leaves, if they are green, or are they brown, or are they budding and blooming flowers.
