So I claimed a shack and I didn't build it. I want to meet up with a friend of mine, so I was going to kill myself and try to spawn up north where he is. Well since I claimed this shack it just spawns me back there. How do I unclaim it. Its not even an option when I click on the shack

There isn't. Also, if you wouldn't have any home, you could have spawned in one of couple hundred places around the map, and of course you would have lost skill points along the way. It's much safer to just traverse there on foot.

Might be good to have an option via r-click context menu to 'Unbind' from a building/house...thus returning the character to the state where death would mean spawning at one of the random respawn points.
