If you can't beat them, bot them!

Post by Linbaba » 21 Dec 2016, 14:19

No matter what people say I'm stil really worried about bots.

Any game, even offline games that contains grind, will necessarilly attract trainers, bots and 3rd party programs in general.

The more there is grind, the more incentive to have bots.

This being an indie company, and (honestly no offence intended) but that being mostly easy to see in the detail of things, from the obsolete forum to the UI, ingame communication and more. (it's not a critique, but an observation), I would think it will be particularly more vulnerable to hackers, bots and the such.

At least compared to none indie games who, for the most part, suffer a lot from this problem.

I played Black Desert Online for a while, and there's something I saw there that you will find in many Asian games, so if you hadn't thought of it you might find it usefull.

What they did is apply the old "if you can't fight it, legalise it" concept.

Applied to bots, this would mean "if you can't fight them, design the game so that there is no need for them".

If you introduce automated features in a game, that's something that not only botters won't take unfair advantage of compared to people who don't bot, but it will integrate that feature in a controlled way into your game.

It's a lesser of two evils and would also serve as a consequence, to lighten the burden of the grind which seems to be putting off a lot of people including me.

Don't worry, be happy.

Making an organized bot business on LIF would be crazy hard.

Sure it's possible, but the preparation would be long and risks are huge. "Gold farmer" guilds would be such an easy target to declare war on and raid out.

To make any kind of long term business they would have to fully play the game and have a secure base of operations, otherwise they wouldn't have much to offer really.

I honestly think you and others are under estimating this, you won't be seeing much until release, maybe that's why.

There's also a difference here, no one cares about "gold" they would farm. I mean people will care, but the real value isn't in material things.

In this game, the main issue will be with skills.

"buy an ccount with capped skills"

this would save you days if not weeks of grinding, and I don't see why it would be so hard...

still, my main point wasn't this, my main point was that if devs implement what bots do in their own game, then the need for bots dissapears.

Quick, simplistic example :

A game without Auto-Walk will see programs appear allowing players to auto walk (or people will use macros, or insert a coin into their keyboard).

A game with auto-walk already included in its features will not, at least not for that feature.

The problem is that someone who stays at home to play and grind will have the same skills that I do, for example, for letting my character grinding while I work, does this seems fair?

Or worse, if you sacrifice hanging out with some friends to play, you'll be at the same level of someone who is at the club partying... I don't think this is fair. =P

This goes to everthing from fridays nights into showers... People who ain't at the game can't be stronger that those who are.

Well, I don't know if you played much at the game, but most of the skills are difficult to grind if you are not, at least, close to the computer.

For example, you can't auto-grind herbalism. You can't auto-grind carpentry, as you need to find and cut logs that are not infinite. Also others, like cooking or smelting or forging, need a functional kitchen or forge that consumes coal and sometimes it brokes.

You can't grind several skills in this game if you don't check your screen at least every 10-15 or 30min.

Maybe some combat skills are easier to bot for 1-2 hours. But are the only ones.

I think you'd be surprised., I've played hardcore since Friday (save crashes) and there really isn't much I haven't seen a bot do already in AAA games..

The best part of this game is its not about skill level. It's about player Skill. Let the botters build a shiny big castle. I will come and take it away from them and plant my own flag to take it.

You want to buy a fully leveled character go ahead. when your skills drop to below 60 because my group wants what is yours and our "skill" level is only 60 but we are killing you with crappy weapons. You can go ahead and waste your money for a another new fully leveled character its fine, once you make the nice shinnies again we can come for them again.

The difference between this game is that its full pvp and not a theme park.

Shadowbane had bots. I am sure the people using them thought they were helpful. They were the best thing to find, it was a ton of free gold and free equipment. They never fought back.

One thing that will prevent the bots is that most stuff will require mini games, they just arent in yet.
