Is the Newbie island the same as the main island? In that your position determines what server you're on?
I've been trying for about an hour to play (on Newbie island) but servers 15-21 are down. The picture on each server is the entire island, which leads me to believe that there are multiple servers with the entire Newbie island on it. Am I wrong? Can I do anything to change servers (and finally play) or must I wait out the storm?

We've got some technical difficulties. Hardware problems. Just create a new character for now if you can.

While I hope you got this sorted out, your best bet would probably be to either delete that character and roll a new one who will generate in a version of the newbie island that is up and running, or roll a second character who will also be on a, online server. That will get you online and be able to port to Abella and start playing the game.

And to answer your question, yes, the entirety of newbie island is one server tile and you can travel to different instances of it via thwe ferryman if there are multiple online.
