I completely agree with you, and I feel that this is largely due to the fact that this game is 100% dependent on player interaction, not only because there's nothing to do without other players, but also because trying to build by yourself is a nightmare! I mean, you can only put 80 resources into a building every time you hammer, and if you're building something that requires 1000 resources or more, you're going to be hammering for quite some time without other players to back you up. Also, collecting resources is quite the difficult task.
Another thing that I think makes this game to coop oriented is that the game hands you nothing. I mean, you literally start buck naked on the coast and have to make everything you are going to require from scratch, unlike DayZ, which 2 minutes of looting will net you an assault rifle and more bullets than you will ever use. To sum it all up, this game rocks.
