Distance & Lighting

Post by Elariuz » 11 Aug 2016, 15:26

Hello Life is Feudal community+staff

I posted this in the General Discussion forum but no reply for a good week so I thought I'd try my luck here. Maybe its more relevant here as well.

I have a question regarding darkness and specifically artificial lighting in darkness at a distance.

Here is the view of our fortress from the top of our keep in daylight:

As you can see when it is night time, the light from the Lamp Posts and the Floor Lamps are almost invisible. Actually, from the keep you can only really see a slight flickering in the dark, like distant fireflies.

I love how the lighting looks at twillight and in the evening but I'm a a bit disappointed in how it looks at night.

My question is this:

Is it because of our video settings? We've changed and tinkered around with them with no real change. Or is this just how lighting works in the game right now? It becomes invisible at a certain distance.

EDIT: https://streamable.com/9pzh - Here i tried recording to show the 'distant firefly' effect as well as how the lighting becomes visible gradually as I fall from the keep to the ground.

In case the lack of response is because of me not being very clear of what the issue is, here is two screenshots showing the 'problem' from another angle.

Here you see our town from a corner tower at twillight. Notice the artificial light sources in the towers, at the top of the keep.

Here is the same angle, but at night:

The artificial light from the light sources become invisible at night but are visible at twillight at range.

I'm a little disappointed that nobody has acknowledged this post. I'd really like if someone could clarify if this is really working as intended or a bug. It's been almost 3 weeks since I posted this the first time in the general forum.

To bump myself, I had an interesting 'bug' after i loaded in today.

For a short duration after loading in, I could suddenly see the lights from distance:

30 seconds later, this is the same view. Note that it was still deep night in both screenshots.

You can see the difference in light levels overall from the right side. It was as if the 'darkness' hadn't fully loaded in the first screenshot.

I don't know whether it works as intended, but every light source at night becomes dim (and even invisible at distance). Looks weird, like very dense black fog. I hope it's an acknowledged bug and it will be fixed eventually.

Seems like at your last screenshots it was late evening and 30 seconds later night fell.

Lighting def needs an overhaul. maybe further modifications to the Torque Engine to support Global illumination, etc?

Currently even world objects and trees seem very off, and pre-lit, and do not go with the over all atmosphere at all.
