Hi guys, forgive me if this topic has appeared before..
Ok why oh why should someone like myself bother to invest time and skills in cooking? I know food has a positive affect on skill gain X ( I think) , but any player can get by surviving entirely on apples or foraged items.
Until some sort or starvation mechanic is introduced or severe negative impact from malnutrition it`s all pointless in my opinion. This leads onto other points in the game when playing on a full or MMO server... Obviously if a town needs cooks/farmers they may want to go out their way to poach/entice other players from neighbouring villages etc. This also stopped in its tracks by "survive by apples" method.
Malnutrition and starvation should lead to extremely poor crafting results, produce quality, weak fighting and so on.
I have based this on primarily my own experience living in a village with 8 plus others.

Now the question becomes what Skill Multiplier is that server set to? Because if its anything higher than like 3x then yeah high quality multi ingredient food isn't needed as much. Quality foods are used to get your skill multiplier up so that you can raise your skills faster. On a server with a higher multiplier it doesn't matter as much, but if you play the base game with only a 1x Skill Multiplier I can tell you that quality food is a necessity if you want to get your skills up in a decent time span.

Example:
Say Erik the Viking was playing on a 1x Skill Server and he survived only on apples, at best his Skill Multiplier would be is 1.5x with HQ Apples. Now if Erik ate a HQ 5 Ingredient Food all the time his Skill Multiplier would be 5.5x.

Now Erik the Viking plays also on a 30x Skill multiplier server, he eats regular crappy apples and gets a .75x multiplier. He still has a 22.5x Multiplier and still gains skill quickly so he doesn't need to rely on HQ multi-ingredient food to gain skill.

I would have to agree with Alakar on this one. If played the way this game is designed cooking becomes one of the most important professions in the game.

If we take it a step further and look at the developers vision for skill gain in the mmo:
Q: Will the multiplier be x1?
A: The multiplier will be different. There is a global multiplier, skills multiplier, and ability multiplier. Results could be even less than x1 in some abilities. His vision for skill progression is the following; It should take you a couple hours of relaxed gaming to reach skill 30. It should take you a couple days to reach skill 60. It should take you a couple weeks to reach skill 90. It should take a year to reach skill 100.

With the "It should take you a couple of weeks to reach skill 90. It should take a year to reach skill 100" getting your skill multiplier up with eating high quality, 5 ingredience food will be a major boost for anyone playing this game.


Yes, with the current state of servers where most of them run a 50xmultiplier cooking is pointless, cause as you said, you can manage of just eating apples. But if played the way it's designed and balanced cooking is one of the most, if not the most, important professions for any group to master.

Ok lads I understand your point :) what about end game..? when everyone has almost achieved 100 what then for the farmer.. cook?
I am not going to sit here and pretend I know all the mechanics of LIF, I do not and nor do I have an extensive knowledge yet.. I am just finding that I am pretty much redundant now! what would a MMO server be like when everyone's tools up and achieved their skill goals.
Just a thought .. or am I missing something?
I feel food should have an impact on something more than skill gain.

You have new recruits to skill up, old players to reskill and most importantly warriors who die and lose points in the process and want to regain them ASAP.
