Why is it that sawing a log and failing doesn't give you XP, yet searching for food/fibre/fishing and failing does? It's such a chore trying to get building logs when you constantly fail and get no XP to improve your chances of actually getting one.

There needs to be enough of the log left for it to produce a building log. Sawing is a no fail task and the problem you're most likely running into is that there is not enough log left to make a building log.

If you inspect the log and check it's durability, this will show you the remaining resources of the log.

A building Log will consume 100 durability.
A board will consume 20 durability.
A billet will consume 10 durability.

So if there is a log with 60 durability left, you can produce:
3x Boards [20 durability x 3 = 60 durability] or 6x Billets [10 durability x 6 = 60 durability]

However, you cannot get 1x Building Log [100 durability x 1 = 100 durability] because there is only 60 durability left.

I'm assuming the tree information is still close to LiF:YO, so some things to note:
  • Lower quality trees will have less durability then high quality trees.
  • Fully grown trees will have more durability then young trees.
  • Softwoods generally have less durability than hardwoods.
