for ages there has been the problem of the instantanious opening and closing of palisade gates, portcullis and even drawbridges. Not only does it break immersion immensively, it is a constant source of frustration during PVP.
Players hide behind a gate, open it for a split second, shoot someone in front of the gate and close it again within an eye-blink. Players fight at a gate and hope to draw an enemy inside, even just for one step, to instantaneously close the gate behind him to trap and kill him. The fact that those mazes of palisades are build at sieges, which are as ridiculous as they are frustrating, is largely due to the fact that players with the right to open gates can move very fast through them, thanks to the fact that the gates open in an instant.
I therefor propose that all military gates (palisade gates, stone gatehouse, castle gatehouse) start a progress bar when a player opens or closes them. Only when the progress bar is finished, will the gate close or open.
To add more realism to this feature, different gates could take a different amount of time to fill the progress bar. Reasonable values seem to be three seconds for palisade gates, 5 seconds for stone gatehouses and 8 seconds for castle gatehouses. To limit the loss in Quality of Life that comes with this feature, it may be a good idea to only have it active during JH of the claim the building is on. Those are anyway the times when PVP is likely to happen.
