Animal Lore

Post by Stianos » 21 Sep 2014, 01:03

We've been having issues raising animal lore, anyone know any good ways to raise it? I'm not sure if it's broken, but it seems like we can't get XP.

  1. Set out some Snare traps
  2. Build a Coop
  3. Add animals you get from the Snare traps into the Coop
  4. Add food to the Coop
  5. Wait around 24 hours or so
  6. "Clean" and "Harvest" the Coop to gain skill
  7. Repeat from 3 or 4 as needed

Depends on server settings, but most of them it is 24 hours IRL I fear.
But I did say "or so".

You have to make the snare first if i remember correctly you need 3 sticks and 10 "grass" right click the sticks to make the snare. :%)

What kind of food should I use? I don't have my crops at full swing yet so will I need to run around and scavenge as much Wheat as I can or what?

I have the coop built with chickens and hares inside, but the server has been down since then. Hoping they haven't starved since I didn't have food in there initially lol.

I have only tired Apples, but I would guess Carrots and Cabbage work too.

Setting them in the forest seem to yield better, but also look at the Q of your Snare traps.
You may need to level up your Fishing/hunting skill so you can make better Q Snare traps.

And what about "track the weak animal"? this action often reveals tracks to nowhere. Tried to set snares mostly where those steps end, but no result.

Tracks lead to the closest moose and/or wolf.
If there is none, one is spawned.

Set Snare traps for small animals, and Animal traps for large animals.

Is it confirmed that Animal Traps work? I've had great luck with snares, but I haven't caught anything from my animal trap after a full day of planting it every 2 hours. Any tips on that would be appreciated.

This sounds great Dean, however my chickens and hares died of old age within the 24 hrs. Is that a server setting issue, or is that a lack of food? I noticed all of the food was gone when I got back (aprox 8-10 hrs)

I wrote that guide based on information I have and my understanding of it.
I have yet to get higher than 0 Animal Lore my self.

Same thing happened to my 7 chickens it seems, it may have something to do with the server having been down for over 24 hours though.

This may be the wrong place to post sorry.
I have managed to make a few snares and have successfully caught a hare and chicken. I slaughtered both and got bones and feathers.

I was hoping to make a coop soon but not sure what I will need. Is this carpentry? Do I make them on a workbench?

Thanks in advice.

Basically you're gonna need to level up construction and forging to make a coop, as you need nails and stuff. Just level up your construction to 60(I think) and then you should be getting the option to make the coop. Then you need 60 nails which are made by a forger/smelter so yeah.. You need someone to go down that path aswell.

I believe most crops work in the coop. I have a coop with hares only and can confirm that they at least eat carrots. I couldn't manage to add grapes. With chickens in them you can collect eggs but I'm not sure if you can harvest anything off hares.

I have also not caught anything in the big traps, not sure if I'm doing something wrong. A group of us tried to lure a wolf into one trap but that didn't seem to work.

Also, when the server is updated, there is a good chance that your traps have reset (if they were sprung they're then back to deployed)

I haven't used an Animal Trap yet my self as I have had to change server twice since my first post in here.
But they should work the same as Snare Traps.

Construction skill level needed is 50.
The wiki works for some of this, use it.

well Dean,
Finally got a coop myself. After we burned half the island down for fire which is still not working for us.
Put my animals in it 24 hours ago.
They have eaten well, pooped some, and I checked them right before I started harvest. I had ten animals. 5 chickens and 5 rabbits.
30 RL minutes later. they are all dead. Old age.
Prior to the harvest the youngest was 2, had just put it in, and the oldest was 7, expected it to maybe die.
So they are all gone.

Traps, cant test em.
Animals still don't work here either. :%)

I have just gotten my Animal Lore skill to 40 on the server I play on (x10 skill).

Cleaning the coop gives about 1 skill point.
Harvesting eggs from chickens give around 10 skill points.

So chickens are clearly the best.

Animals do seem to die at age 7, and aging seems to be really really fast.
I would love it if one animal year was 24 RL hours.

Getting dung is also really important for fertilizing, and we get it WAY too slow.

I am currently playing around with an Animal Trap, but no luck yet.

Or something. Like I said above, the ones I had were age 2 -7. 30 minutes before I found them dead they were those ages.
Then dead. All of them.
Seems a problem with the aging mechanic? Or apparently if one keels over they all decide to follow the elder in a massive journey to the happy coop beyond.

From what I have played around with, you can harvest chickens around every 30min - 1hr(i tried 15mins got nothing), going to retry 30mins.
A safe bet would be for every chicken's year do a harvest.

Except that suddenly they all drop dead no matter what the age..
But good news!

I think the biggest issue with the animal lore right now is two fold, first and foremost; animals don't breed, meaning you have to capture a bunch of new animals every day. If breeding would be implemented (how ever rudimentary) progressing in animal lore would become so much easier. Second point (IMO) is that trapping new animals costs way too much effort. The amounts of snares I have to set every day to ensure my eggs and poop pile up in the coop is at least 8 but preferably 16 or so; which is fine, what my problem currently is is that the snares disappear after being used. This means I have to go around collecting 160 plant fiber every day, just to be able to set the traps. Can't it be made that you get to reuse the snare, but you have to add new bait to it? (and additionally maybe reduce the 'silly' amount of apples you can harvest in one go at this time?)
