Building underground

Post by JakeImpregnator » 11 Dec 2015, 14:23

So tonight I plan on digging a trench type settlement, digging a door way in to the side of a hill, and then opening up the area inside in order to make a kind of hillside cave.

1. Can this be done?
2. What would be the most efficient way of doing this?
3. Can I use the basic shovel, that's all I have so far.
4. Will I need to reinforce the walls inside, if so, how?

Thanks in advance, hopefully I'll be able to jump on and do it in a few hours tonight. Or at least get started.

I am not sure what it is exactly you are trying to do. For me, I once tried a similar idea and tried to have a gate in front of a tunnel entrance. I am not sure if it can be done. Even in GM mode. Maybe if you make the building overground first and edit the database to change their altitudes but I'm not sure how that would even work.

Say you found a 5 tile high terrain wall (snow)
- If you try to dig a tunnel on it, a 2-tile high opening will appear at the 3rd to 5th tile height of the terrain wall.
- Tile 0 - 3 will still have a terrain wall

I played around with this quite a bit but could never get it to work

If you do not care for
1) buildings underground in a tunnel or
2) the tunnel entrance having a gate immediately in front of it

Then yes, perhaps what you are saying can be done

PS: You need a pickaxe not a shovel & Reinforcing requires you to have 90 terraforming + a carpenter / logger helping you out as Hardwood Boards and Building Logs are required

even supports disapear over time so it wil collapse sooner or later,

what u want, first flatten the location to put the gate
make it so that the flattend ground hugs the wall as close as posable, dont finish the build yet, just get some box or something to stand on, and dig a tunnel higher than ground lvl (i think best would be see that its about the hight of your char ist waist if u would stand on "ground lvl" if u understand what i wanne say)
dig it deep enoph at this lvl and everything u want digged,
than drop the box or whatever u used and dig out the lower lvl all over.
that way u get bigger rooms.
once u got the stuff digged out (specialy at the entrance) than finish the gate closing it up, and this is a weard explanation bhut not easy to explain imo
hope u understand and have fun bhut keep in mind, it wil colapse at some point
